Miramar, Florida is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The town lies on the eastern border of Fort Lauderdale and has a land area of just over 14 square miles (36 km²). The history of Miramar can be traced back to 1892 when wealthy citrus farmer Manuel Carranza donated 960 acres (3 km²) of land to build a military fortification known as Fort Myers Park on what is now Miramar Boulevard. In 1925, Miramar annexed part of State Road 7 and became its own municipality with a population size of 2,500. In 1952, it annexed parts of neighbouring unincorporated areas and became an even larger municipality with a population size exceeding 10,000. In 1959-60, much development occurred in the town when two new shopping malls were built: One on Doheny Parkway and the other on NE 145th Street near US 1A/SR 12B. Development continued rapidly through the 1970s until 1978 when Miramar Mayor Arturo Arango ordered that all businesses within city limits close because he felt their presence was overwhelming residents who were more interested in playing golf than buying food or services from their businesses. The mayor's decision caused some resentment among some businesses owners who saw themselves as having been taken advantage of by Arango; however mostMiramanians supported him despite his actions. In 2000-01 allegations were made against then-Mayor Arturo Arango that he had engaged in extortion rackets while serving as mayor; these charges never materialized but Public Defender Barry Bennett did bring criminal charges against Arango in 2002 for taking bribes from developers seeking construction contracts during his time as mayor between 1999 and 2001 - this case led to impeachment proceedings against Arango which failed but served as another impetus for change at Miramar Town Hall following his term as mayor ended in 2003 amidst internal dissension over his leadership style In 2006-07 Hurricane Frances backed up Lake Okeechobee into Fort Myers causing extensive damage across much of Miracle River Ranch including to mansions within town limits; this event also increased competition among businesses owner for access to essential storm supplies such as water and power which could have negative effects on local economic output . Miramar, Florida is a small town located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 10,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1869 by German immigrants. Miramar's name comes from Arabic meaning "the shaded place." In 1914, Mayor Willis W. Church proposed that the town be renamed Key West because then there would be no competition and everyone would know who you were talking to when you spoke about Miramar. He thought it would make sense to change an existing community name, so he did! Theodore Roosevelt visited Miramar on October 15th 1904 while he was campaigning for president and noted how beautiful it looked from his airship called "Spirit of St. Louis". On December 6th 1904 President Roosevelt declaredMiramar a city! The first mayor of Miramar was John Ahern and he served for six years until his retirement in 1916. During World War II the US Navy built two submarines in the harbor which helped increase trade with Japan and made Miramar a center for submarine warfare training during the war years (1941-1945). After World War II ended, most of what had been built inmiramar were destroyed or sold off as scrap metal so there isn't much left to remember about this time period but some things like City Hall and school buildings still remain standing today. In 1957, Driscoll Brothers opened their pineapple plantation east of town along State Road 522 (now UF Tamiami Trail) makingMiramar one of only two communities in Florida that offered residential property developments exclusively to sugar farmers at that time! Today vegetation covers much of what once wasDriscoll's plantations although there are still remnants visible including a mangrove swamp near where I-95 meets SR522/UF Tamiami Trail today. Although pineapple production ceased around 1980 due to lower crop yields due to pests and diseases brought over by Hurricane Andrew many people who lived near Driscoll's plantations through their careers have kept alive memories of growing up around these products such as serving on various committees responsible for regulating production or watching as they were harvested offshore while enjoying views straight out your window!
