In 1836, two Seminole Indians named Tallahassee and Ponce landed at Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay looking for land to settle. They were not welcomed by the Spaniards who thought they were only looking for land to trade with Spain. In retaliation, Tallahassee killed four American soldiers near Fort Brooke before being captured and brought back to Tampa Bay where he was tried and executed as an Indian war leader on 5 October 1836. This event is generally considered to be the start of the Seminole War between American colonists and Native Americans which lasted until 1865. One of the most significant events during this time period was when Floridians voted themselves a state government under Governor James Kenedy on 12 November 1861. At this time, much of what is today central Florida had yet to be explored or settled from Spain's exploration efforts during their owncolonial era which spanned from 1565-1821 inclusive! The Treaty of Moultrie Creek resulted inFlorida becoming part of Mexico upon its independence from Spain on 14 February 1821 - less than three months after Discovery! This boundary change allowed for development within both countries' lands but also opened up opportunities for new settlement including Cuban refugees who fled Fidel Castro's Marxist revolution aboard shipwrecked Venezuelan vessels during their exile from Havana throughout 1959-1962!
