Miramar, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,674 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Miramar comes from Spanish for "Island of the Dolphins." The town was first established in 1871 by political settlers who had followed Governor Stetson's recommendation to move to Monroe County after land grant extensions were made available there. The original post office and store were both located on what is now US-1 north of town. In 1905, a new post office was built on Pine Street west of the railroad tracks which served as the community's commercial center until it burned down in 1941. In 1912, Miramar hosted its first county fair which attracted over 100 exhibitors and more than 5,000 spectators. Two years later, Floridians approved a $5 per capita tax increase to support county fairs statewide. By 1924, every municipality in Monroe County had one or more annual county fairs and Miramar became an early exponent with their own exposition pavilion that year.
The Miramar area was first settled by the Apalachee people in the early 1800s. In 1819, Captain James Cook discovered the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix in the Indian Ocean and named them after his unit, The Beagle Fleet. The British colony of Florida was founded in 1763 by refugees from Britain's American colonies. After a year of exploration, Cook named the area Terra Nova after himself and laid out a new town on an islet he called "Cape John." The first European to set foot on Florida's mainland was Juan Ponce de Leon, who explored Pensacola Bay in 1539. In 1665, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered Tampa Bay and named it Santa Teresa de la Marina; however, this name never stuck with the settlement because it sounded similar to Santiago del Cabo which had been renamed San Francisco by Spanish settlers two years earlier. In 1821, Miramar received its own government when Captain James Cook sailed into what is now Marathon Bay and anchored off Miramar Island; Fort Brooke (later known as Fort Pierce) was built immediately adjacent to Miramar Beach to protect English ships offshore from Seminole Indians raiding their vessels along Miami River bottomlands. The fortifications were abandoned in 1828 when Captain George Demers landed here with another English fleet seeking refuge during the Seminole War of 1836-1838; but they were reactivated a few years later when steamboats began providing transportation between Key West and Sarasota County for cattle buyers looking for winter range near Tampa Bay. Lt.-Colonel David Ewing organized Presidio Volunteer Cavalry Regiment No 2 (Florida Volunteers), made up mostly of Native Americans from southeastern Tennessee Territory under command of Colonel Robert Watts at Camp Pickens about two miles south of present-day Clearwater on January 12th 1861; Watts led a force ashore at Little Big Horn Creek Bridge over that creek just east of today's US Highway 1A below milepost 133 on December 4th 1861 to suppress Indian resistance against Ulysses S Grant’s Overland Expedition pursuing General Andrew Jackson’s army across Central America during Mexican–American War On November 3rd 1862 East Baton Rouge Parish residents meeting at Second Baptist Church observed Decision Day which announced Lincoln’s successful election as President resulting in Mexico ceding Texas including New Mexico westward to United States pursuant to Treaty Between Great Britian & Mexicali
