Miramar is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868 by Stephen Cushing and his brother Ebenezer. The name comes from Miramar Key, which is located about two miles (3 km) east of the town center on St. Johns Bayou. Climate change has increased coastal flooding in Miramar over the past few decades, which has resulted in large patches of mudslide damage and loss of homes and businesses along FM 9042. In early 2018, it was reported that approximately $2 million had been spent to clean up the damage caused by Hurricane Irma; however no Clean Water Act fines have yet been levied as a result of this repair work. According to the 2000 US Census, Miramar's population was 1,503 people; however its population grew to 2,059 during the 2010 census due to annexation of Springhill Village adjacent to town limits. The community annexed Springhill Village because there was not enough land available for both residents and businesses within town limits when the original settlement started off - only 8 acres (3 ha) were set aside forATION purposes back then!
In 1892, Miramar was founded as a small town by Irish immigrants. In 1937, the city of Miramar was added to Broward County, Florida. The city is now part of Fort Lauderdale.
