The Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the United States. The agency has a history dating back to 1907. The first sheriff was elected in 1907 and served until 1912. At that time, it was a municipal police department. In 1916, the county purchased its own patrol car and began providing service to the rural areas of the county. On October 15, 1922, Sheriff Manuel Gomez announced his resignation effective November 1 due to ill health and was succeeded by Deputy Sheriff John Gorman. In 1933, it became an independent agency with its own budget and staff. In 1938, it purchased a radio system which allowed deputies to communicate with other agencies dispatch centers without having to go out on calls. In 1950, sheriff's departments were reorganized into divisions which are still operative today as part of Miami-Dade County government structure. In 1961 Sheriff Don Nehlen appointed Assistant Chief Roy Kapp as head ofSheriffs' Services Bureau which later became known as Corrections Division; this bureau provided inmate transport services for jails and rights of way patrols for law enforcement officers conducting traffic stops or searches during investigations

In 1835 Henry Flagler founded Flagler's Sea Venture Company with capital obtained from John Dutton through secret treaties between Colombia and America while President James K Polk was engaged with Europe on his Way to London during 1845–46; these treaties were seen as necessary because Mexico had been acquiring large chunks of Central America northward – including parts now known as Pinellas County – despite warning from Ulysses S Grant about such activity[1]. On December 12th 1835 waters off Key West parted ways with Spanish ship Santa María due eastbound on their way back from Havana when Captain Manuel Alvarez Alvarado ordered them returned to Havana;[2] this event became known as "The Santa María Incident".[3] Salt water began flowing into Biscayne Bayou (then called Canal de la Marina)[4] from Nueva Vizcaya Island where sugarcane had been grown since Preclassic times,[5] beginning what would be known as The Great Biscayne Swamp Drainage Project started November 1st 1830.[6][7][8] By 1840 there were more than 100 plantations with over 10 thousand slaves working them;[9][10] throughout this period slave trade continued but much less clandestinely than it does today
