Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 714,812 at the 2010 census. It is the largest municipality by population in Miami-Dade County and one of its five county seat municipalities. The city's history dates back to 1855 when it was named "Pulaski" after General James Pulaski who fought in the Mexican–American War. In 1925, Miami absorbed Everglades City, then known as Biscayne Bay City. In 1959, Coral Gables became a separate city and Miami proper became a municipal jurisdiction within Miami-Dade County. On July 1, 2006, both Biscayne Bay City (formerly Coral Gables) and Coral Gables were merged into Miami with their respective populations of over 700,000 residents making them one municipality with a total population of 2 million residents only; this change also increased the size of Miami-Dade County from 29 to 31 counties effective January 1st 2007. On October 5th 1970 gunmen opened fire on an American Airlines jetliner flying over downtown Miami while on approach to New York JFK Airport killing all seventy four passengers and six crew members; this event is now officially known as "the WTC Shooting". The attack remains one of the most notorious terrorist incidents in United States history
