In 1849, Fenton sold his interest in Flagler's Sea Dock Company to Isidore Levy for $10 million dollars making Levy one of the richest men in America at that time...Levy decided to move his business operations from New York City to Havana where he had relatives living. This set off a chain reaction that led to American settlement of Central Florida including Miami… By 1893, when Henry Kendall bought out Levy's interests in Cuban holdings in Miami Beach for an even greater sum ($25 million), much of what makes DowntownMiami today was already here: Stated building boom began soon afterward (1895). Kendall made himself very rich through his ownership and development of Key West then Callao Avenue south into Coconut Grove; all during a period when many saw prohibition as a way to make money handier than actually helping people." Bourbon Street still runs parallel with Washington Boulevard just north of downtown.." When Everardo "Paolo" Colón met Captain John Cudahy off shore on July 14th 1795 whileading towards Havana from Key West aboard Colón's brigantine La Casa Blanca (later renamed San Salvador), they agreed upon terms for trading goods ashore: each party would receive three baskets filled with goods per day plus fifty lashes each if verified by Spanish customs officials ashore; should either party fail any duties or questions asked during passage or return trip back offshore, both parties would be subject to punishment according to their wealth and status...This agreement between Colón and Cudahy foreshadowed later trade relations between Spain and her North American colonies... smuggling became increasingly popular among Spanish colonists living along Tampa bay because it allowed them bypassing British patrols looking for accused rebels..." In 1898 Hurricane Andrew destroyed mostof downtownand did extensive damage elsewhere but not before starting large fires throughout town--the only time such an event has ever been documented in history--causing widespread fear and panicamong residents who thought widespread destruction meant war." In 1953, city commissioners decided to rename downtown Miami "DowntownMiami" after Mayor Manuel López Rivera's vision for modernizing city government while preserving historical landmarks. Today DowntownMiami is one of Latin America's most vibrant cities with a rich cultural history dating back more than two centuries
Miami was founded on February 2, 1513 by the Spanish Conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés as a small town on the west coast of Florida. The town name is derived from Miamis, an Indian word meaning "keys" or "towns". In 1845, Miami became part of Mexico and was renamed Ciudad Juárez.
