The history of Miami is intertwined with the firearms industry. More than 50 plants were operated here between 1942 and 1945; these included Westinghouse Electric Corporation’s Homestead Works (established 1941), United States Military Ammunition Plant No. 3 (established 1943), PX-1 (1944), US Munitions Research Laboratory (PRL) (1945), Gunnery School No. 828th Naval Gunfire Training Squadron (Naval Air Station Miramar) (1945-46), US Army Ammunition Plant 4-A(?),[1][2] among others.[3][4] After 9/11/, gun targets on both sides of Florida'sgrenade belt are becoming more common place with people armed with assault rifles now instead of pistols or shotguns

On January 15, 1959, due to Hurricane Andrew's passage through South Florida and failure to make landfall on land as anticipated, West Palm Beach became the only municipality within Everglades National Park and City of Miami automatically lost its charter status as a city with limited jurisdiction over all other municipalities within park boundaries (although it still has taxing rights).
