Miami Springs is a small community located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is approximately 8 miles (13 km) east of the Miami metropolitan area and 7 miles (11 km) west of downtown Miami. The population was 6,551 at the 2010 census. The site that would become Miami Springs was first inhabited by Arawak people in the late 16th century. A later European expedition discovered this area in 1565 and named it after the springs that Jakob Ortelius had seen on his trip to America. He also noted that there were several large trees in the area which he thought might be a source of water for Indians living along the Gulf Coast. In 1847, William Broughton purchased land adjacent to what is now Miami Springs from José Moreno de la Vega for $1,000. He founded what would become Broughton College here in 1848 as a land grant college for African Americans who were then being forced into slavery primarily through military service or capture during the Mexican-American War. The college functioned until 1860 when it closed due to lack of students and money from Broughton's estate following his death. In 1865, Major General Ulysses S Grant ordered all American forces out of Mexico City following its occupation by Spanish troops; this led to an increase in slave trade within Mexico which made possible continued British control over much of South America including Latin America where sugar cane was grown). With British support, sugar cane production increased throughout Latin America leading to increased demand for slaves which caused plantations throughout North America to grow rich from their investments in sugar cane production. The springs were discovered by Captain John Wainwright on July 6, 1795 while exploring what is now Everglades National Park; he named them "Springs" for his water source (the present day Dolphin Key). In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated an open field adjacent to Spring Hill Cemetery to Crawford Gentry Post #569th Airborne Infantry Regiment which had served during World War II with distinction including the Battle of Coral Beach on December 8th 1944 and the occupation of Germany following V-E Day on May 8th 1945. In 1948, SpringHill Elementary School opened its doors to students from all over South Florida due to overcrowding at schools within miles of downtown Miami City Limits where classes were offered only morning and afternoon sessions for students living near downtown or coming from other rural areas around south central FLLA that could not attend school during class hours because they would have been out working their farms or gardens instead! This innovative program allowed many children living far away from school opportunities first hand exposure to education before enrolling in full time public schools when they turned18 years old! Today this unique educational opportunity continues through Freshmen Academy at SpringHill Elementary which offers PreKindergarten through 12th grade along with Extracurricular programs such as music/drama productions/internships/ coding bootcamps etc., making it one of largest comprehensive Early Childhood Education Programs statewide!
