Miami Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It lies on the edge of the Everglades National Park and is bordered by Miami Gardens to the north, Coral Gables to the east, Hollywood Boulevard to the south, and Cutler Bayou to the west. The name Miami Springs is derived from "Miamis" (a Seminole word meaning "watercourse"), which refers to its location on what was once a watercourse called Okeechobee River. He built a mill there that became one of Miami Springs' most popular tourist attractions; visitors could spend days swimming in his artificial spring pool or taking walks around his gardens. In 1932 developer Wirt Hite sold 5 square miles (12 km2) of land adjacent to present day Spring Hill Road for $1 million (). This parcel became known as Hite's Corner (), whence comes today's name for Miami Springs: "Hite's Landing". In 1937 entrepreneur Sam Dooley developed an amusement park called Dunes Dome across from where he lived with his family until his death in 1994. Dooley had originally acquired 600 acres (24 km2) east of present day SpringHill Rd., which became known as East Dunes (); it would be divided into three parcels - 220 acres (8 km2) went to Dooley's son-in-law Milton Sheman while 160 acres (6 km2) remained undeveloped until 1954 when it was donated by businessman Clyde Frazier; it now forms part of Myers Park Community Services District). The remaining 200 acres/8 hectares became known as West Dunes (), later renamed Hollywood Hills () after movie star Humphrey Bogart who spent time there during World War II while living in nearby Pembroke Pines . Despite being close enough Universal Studios Theme Parks such as Islands Of Adventure were only 10 minutes away through public transportation operated by Metrorail Red voltage trains running between Broward County Transportation Authority stations located just outside Boynton Beach ()
