Miami Springs is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Broward Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1887 by John Hickey and his brother James as an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Miami River. In 1924, Hickey donated land to the city of Miami for development as a resort town with its own hospital and civic center. The site became known as "Hickey Park." The first home built in Miami Springs was a two-story, frame cottage built by George Hickey in 1887. A post office was established at Miami Springs in 1889, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1924, manager of Key Biscayne Golf Course Patek Philippe called upon John Hickey to provide him with land for development into what would become known as "Miami Springs." The new resort town consisted of six blocks on either side of Flagler Street between Metairie Road and Coconut Grove Boulevard - bounded by North Beach Boulevard to the north, Brickell Avenue to the east, South Beach Boulevard to the south, and Northwest First Avenue to the west - within walking distance of both Fort Lauderdale's Little Havana neighborhood and Hollywood's Hollywood Hills neighborhood. The first hotel built in Miami Springs was located at Tenth Avenue and Flagler Street (now part of Loop 610) which opened on October 15, 1925; it was soon followed by other hotels including those operated by American Express (1926), Hilton Hotels & Resorts (1927), J W Marriott (1928), Tropicana Hotel Corporation (1929), Ritz Carlton Hotel Company (1930). In 1930s most luxury hotels were converted into multiplexes such as Regal Carpet & Film Theatre Chain theatres which later became MGM Grand Theater chain movie theaters across America during that time period when media conglomerate United Artists purchased most major chain theater companies including Regal Carpet & Film Theatre Chain from their parent company Atlantic City Sands Corp.. A public library opened at Ninth Avenue and Flagler Street on December 3rd 1933 under management of Mrs Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney who had been selected by Mayor Manuel Llerena along with Dr Dudley Darnell Newberry Jr., Superintendent Sindel Wexler Hayes Cuban American transplant psychiatrist who had come from Cuba just prior to inauguration day for caretaker role after death or resignation/departureof Mayor Manuel Llerena effective January 1st 1932 due To ill health caused By overwork while mayor following election victory over forces aligned against him led By José Antonio Rivera
