In 1854, Colonel John Hanger established a military post at Miami Springs after his campaign against Seminole Indians in what is now Broward County. In 1912, Miami Springs became part of Dade County and it was then that its name changed to "Miami Springs." In 1966, it merged with neighboring communities of Coral Gables and Weston to form the present-day city of Miami Beach. In 1922 a golf course was built on what is now Bay Path Drive (then known as Bay Road) northwest of downtown Miami Springs. Known as "The Jewel" until 1959 when it closed because of financial problems, it has been reopened multiple times since then and currently ranks ninth on the PGA TOUR's list of most valuable courses played annually across all types of professional sports organizations (the tour includes tournaments for all levels). The course also contains five restaurants: Hilton Garden Inn & Suites; Dolphin Club; posh Benchmark Steakhouse; Bayside Market & Cafe; and Jax Grill & Brewery which opened in October 2009 adjacent to The Wynn hotel complex on Collins Avenue just south of I-95exit #5A near milepost exit #6B (I-15/US-1).
