In 1947, a company named Sturm Ruger & Co., Incorporated was founded in Miami Springs by two brothers named George A. Sturm and Richard B. Ruger. The Miami Springs Gun Club was formed in 1914 and met at the old fire station on NW 2nd Street. The club has been meeting there ever since. In 1934, the first pistol range opened in the Miami Springs area and continued to be used until 1952 when it was closed due to lack of funding. In 1959, a rifle range opened in the Miami Springs area and continues to be used today. It is currently being leased by another gun club who will continue to use it through 2021. In 1974, a shotgun range opened in Miami Springs and continues to be used today as well.
Miami Springs is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 3,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Miami Beach, Florida's springs that fed the area and its residents for years before they were moved to this new location in 1922. The name "Miami Springs" came about because of efforts by two men: Commodore John C. Harker, who had bought land in 1924, and Drury Ewell Best, who also purchased land nearby in 1923. Best wanted to rename his property after his home town of Spring Lake on Long Island while Harker wanted to recognize Miami Beach's work during World War I as it helped contribute troops and supplies to that conflict. Ultimately both men agreed on "Miami Springs." The first homes were built in the early 1920s on what is now State Road 828 between Center Boulevard (now Utopia Parkway) and Federal Highway 95 south of downtown Miami Springs today's intersection with Northwest Expressway/State Road 2153 (NEXT). These homes would consist of one or two stories with a single bedroom/one bath upstairs and a tiny kitchen downstairs. There was no electricity or running water until the late 1940s when streetlights were installed along Sunrise Boulevard which ran through the center of town then looped back around to NW Expressway/State Road 2153 where it crossed over into Coconut Creek Rd./Sunrise Blvd., providing access from SW corner Avenue to NW Expressway/ State Road 2153 beyond which there was only open field without any development until 1952 when Sunrise Boulevard became known as Coconut Creek Rd./Sunrise Blvd.. A post office called "Miamisburg" opened December 12th 1891 under Act No 697 from Jacksonville Landing Estates donated by Aida Gonzalez Lopez y Valdez #2 . Mrs Gonzalez Lopez moved from Cuba to Miamisburg with her children on October 11th 1892 so she could get US citizenship since their father had died naturalized 10 years earlier while serving aboard USS Constitution under President James K Polk at Havana harbor during America's First World War fought against Spain... Miami Springs was a small town in Polk County, Florida until the early 1920s when it became part of Miami. The springs were first discovered by Spanish explorers in 1537 and named La Cienega de los Menores (The Little Spring of the Lesser Girls). In 1835, banker and landowner James Fenton bought 8,000 acres (3 km2) around the springs from Pedro Menéndez de Avila for $1,000. In 1843, Fenton built a mill on the spring's stream to grind flour for his business. By 1851, he had also erected a store and hotel. The original name of Miami Springs was Indian Key until it changed to Miami in 1865 after American soldiers burned down Fort Moultrie at Key West. In 1919-1920, during World War I effort to create an airfield at MIA Field on present-day Everglades National Park property east of downtown Miami Springs proper, some residents living near MIA Field built their own homes close to springs on 4 lots totaling 22 square feet (18 m2), known as "Springs". These dwellings were heated by open fireplaces with central heating systems that ran off hot water coming out of thesprings. Many people who lived near MIA Field also raised chickens, hogs and other livestock thereabouts. Afterward development efforts moved away from MIA Field towards Atlantico Road and Broward Boulevard where new housing was being built ever since then…..
On October 16, 1926, Miami Springs became a city following the passage of a resolution by the City Council. The vote was 5-0 in favor of incorporation. Miami Springs first got its name from springs that ran through the area. A post office called Metropole Springs was established in 1892 and closed in 1896. In 1907, the Miami Springs Drainage District was created to help with water needs in the area. The first school opened in Miami Springs on November 1, 1928. It was an all-girls school named after Mrs. Alice Morse Cook who donated land for it. The school closed in 1933 but reopened as an all- boys school named Miami Heights School on May 6, 1934 under new management and instruction by Mrs. Cook’s granddaughter Eleanor Morse Gilbert (later Mrs. Art Rooney). In 1935, Driscoll Brothers built a farmstead at what is now NW 117th Street and Northwest 154th Avenue which became home to Miami Springs High School until it merged with Booker T Washington High School in 1972 to form Booker T Washington University Preparatory School (BTWAPS). BTWAPS continued to operate as a high school until it merged into Dillard University's Trump International Hotel and Tower campus on February 17, 2017 which ceased operations due to low enrollment
