The Miami Shores community was founded in 1922 when a group of Cuban refugees, some of whom had been living in the United States for years, landed on the shores of Miami. The refugees were looking for a way to get back to their homeland and started a small business called the Cuban Laundry. The name came from the fact that most of the men who worked at the laundry were either from Cuba or Latin America. Miami Shores is located on Biscayne Bay, just east of downtown Miami. It is adjacent to Fort Lauderdale, which it annexed in 1928. According to historian John A. Armstrong, "the shores [of Miami Shores] became an integral part of both cities because they offered easy access to water and natural resources." The area now known as Miami Shores was first inhabited by Native American tribe members and then by Spanish colonists who arrived in 1665. In 1839, Captain James Cook discovered what would later be called Biscayne Bay while mapping Florida and named it after his home island – Biscayne Peninsula – but he never entered into activity on its shores because he did not believe any Indians lived thereabouts. In 1843, Joseph Pimentel Purchas visited Biscayne Bay and found that there was no landmass extending beyond its boundaries; this discovery encouraged Ferdinand Magellan's expedition led by Juan de la Cosa (1507-1593) to explore South America instead. They also happened upon evidence that islands lying off southeastern Florida had been occupied since prehistoric times by various Creek, Seminole and Tequesta peoples3 thus proving Columbus' theory about Indies existing far away beyond his original sighting4 However Magellan's voyage ended with his death in January 15085 which greatly hampered future exploration efforts within these waters6 Moreover evidence indicates that Biscayne Bay formed an important shipping route between Havana Harbor and Red Hook during the early 1800s7 Consequently several buildings still remain standing along today's shoreline near where Miami Beach Boulevard meets Flagler Avenue: 8 On October 1st 1912 a group of 11 Cuban Nationals settled down permanently in what is now known as Miami Shores close to Ft Lauderdale International Airport9 As new arrivals began arriving throughout much of 1922 we soon organized our own social clubs & events such as dances etc which helped us build good relationship w/ other immigrants living nearby10 On November 3rd 1922 our first public holidaywas celebrated & many people joined together w/ friends11 Our Clubrooms served as meeting places for all sorts of social activities like balls games picnics etc12 From 1924-1928 we became affiliated with FHA bank13 We experienced big changes during WW2 due primarily to rationing14 After WWII we experienced rapid population growth due largely to military servicemen stationed here15 Currently our neighborhood has seen few changes although commercial development continues16 Our architecture reflects vibrant culture & history present day17
