He built a cabin on what is now Collins Avenue and named it after his father's home province of Cuba – Santiago de la Vega. By 1870 there were 10 white families living in Miami Shores and by 1890 there were 20 families with over 100 residents. In 1903 the county commissioners decided to change the spelling of their name to Miami and adopted that spelling for all official documents until 1959 when they reverted back to original Spanish spelling (Havana).
