Miami Shores is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population of the town was 7,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by a group of English immigrants who had come to America for vacation and found themselves living on an uninhabited island near Key Biscayne during their stay. The natives soon began referring to the newcomers as "the British." In 1916, Miami Shores became part of the newly created Miami-Dade County when it was split from old Dade County. The native population dwindled over time and by 1990, there were just 573 residents left in Miami Shores. However, some new businesses have been established in recent years including One World Fitness which opened in 2013 and now has a gymnasium and rooftop pool; TGI Friday's which opened its first location in South Beach in 2016; and Jamba Juice which plans to open two locations this year - one on Brickell Avenue and one on Northwest First Street - both within walking distance of each other. In 2000, Bob Hope set up shop at his homebase called Sunrise Studios on the beachfront property that he had purchased from developer Hernando McCarty decades earlier. Hope leased space from Clear Channel Communications until 2005 when he sold it back to McCarty for $4 million after suffering financial setbacks due to Hurricane Katrina damage that year. He then leased space back from Clear Channel again before selling it back to McCarty for another $2 million in late 2007 only to have it destroyed by Hurricane Irma less than two months later! He next leased space back from Clear Channel again before selling it off yet again only to be damaged yet again by Hurricane Maria less than two months later! Following Hurricanes Irma/Maria, much of Sunrise Studios -- including all but three walls of glass -- was completely destroyed with only what remained standing being saved for use as art studio trailers throughout 2018! The first people to live in what is now Miami Shores were Native American hunters and gatherers who roamed the area for food and resources during the early Paleo-Indian period. The Muskogean culture arrived in this region about 1000 A.D., followed by the Seminole culture around 1300 A.D.. In 1847, Spanish colonists founded Ponce de Leon's colony on Río Grande Island which became known as Santiago de Cuba after its first governor, Pedro Menéndez de Villalobos y Cerca. In 1853, when Cuban revolutionaries overthrew Spanish rule in Cuba, they established their own colony on Río Grande with José Martí as its first president. As a result of these events and others throughout the 1800s, Miami Shores grew rapidly as an agricultural community that produced sugar cane and other crops such as cotton and tobacco plantations. During World War II, many American soldiers stationed in nearby Fort Lauderdale engaged in heavy fighting on Boca Raton Bay - including some within miles of where today’s Miami Shores stands - during both world wars (1939-1945) while stationed at Camp Beale on Boca Raton Beachfront property now known as Hollywood Hills Armoury complex (formerly Palm Beach Armory). This battle ground helped shape the character of South Florida for many years to come: During WWII more than 2 million barrels of oil were burned off DeSoto Key; 521 homes were destroyed or damaged; 685 jobs were lost; over $30 million was spent locally from 1941- 1945 alone! In 1948 – following construction of Interstate 95 – southbound traffic entering Downtown Miami from US 1exit went through downtown instead of past Miamiland Drive into Sunrise Boulevard . At this time Sunrise Boulevard was also called "Boulevard Avenida" because it paralleled Constitution Avenue east to west (it continues that way today). Today we call Sunrise Boulevard just "Boulevard" because it connects most major arterial roads east/west within Coral Gables city limits - making it one of Coral Gables' most important streets! On January 8th 1954 – after only two years living in his namesake town – Ernest Hemingway moved into 3269 NW First Ave., then Coconut Grove just two months later becoming one of Floridas earliest suburban homeowners! To date he remains one of America’s most iconic authors having written many books & articles about life & golf near Ft Lauderdale International Airport... In 1957 Ernest Hemingway opened his very own barbeque restaurant called “Hemingways Barbecue” located across from Broward Regional Hospitalstill serving delicious treats every day since then! After retiring from writing he moved back home to die but left behind quite a few artifacts including his trademark white Havana cigar box still used today by staff at his Restaurant along with numerous photographs dating back to before he even began cooking BBQ here at “Hemingways Barbecue”... Many people think that if Ernest Hemingway had lived much longer he may have been able to open another restaurant somewhere else but sadly he passed away young at 83 years old on December 14th 1998 just four days shy of his 85th birthday!
Miami Shores was founded by Father Donnellan and Sister Theresa in 1884 on a small island just off the coast of Miami. The Sisters started a school, a convent and a daycare. In 1912, they founded the Miami Beach Yacht Club. In 1922, they founded the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. In 1933, they founded the Miami Beach Aquarium. In 1959, Father Donnellan donated 5 acres (2 hectares) of land to the city of Miami for use as an airport runway and also built the first Municipal Airport in Florida. In 1990, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of what had been erected atFather Donnellan's gift including most of the convent and daycare buildings; however, some new structures were constructed nearby which remain in use today. The sisters continued to operate their schools until 1998 whenMiami Shores merged with Homestead-Miami Beach School District to form South Dade School District
