From this marriage arose one of South Florida's most powerful families: AnnaMaria de la Vega Kline became Mrs. John Fenton Key (June 21st 1830 – October 2nd 1915). This period saw rapid settler expansion throughout south central Florida as investors sought to make profits from land which lay within easy access to cotton plantations on the Gulf Coast and Havana Bayou downstream along the Stonington River watersheds; these were also traditional areas where earlier Spanish settlers had planted sugar cane crops dating back centuries previous.
