Miami Shores is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 9,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The town was founded by farmers who settled there in the early 1800s. In 1907, Miami Shores became a city and remains so to this day. The first settlers were farmers who came to live in what is now Miami Shores in 1807. They were led by Captain James Cook, who explored the area that includes present-day Miami Shores when he sailed around South America on his HMS Endeavour in 1768-1769. After landing here, they established a farmstead and started trading with natives for goods and information about routes toaya (now Haiti). The first mayor of Miami Shores was John Wirtz, who served from 1912 to 1916. Mayor Wirtz helped to promote growth in the community and improve infrastructure such as roads and bridges. He also funded school systems within the city limits as well as new churches/synagogues and other civic projects. In 1957, Coral Gables became an incorporated municipality which united several villages including Coconut Grove, Midtown East, Overtown West and Wynwood into one place for economic development purposes known then as "Coral Gables". When annexation occurred subsequent years it moved northward along Biscayne Boulevard until it met up with Flagler Heights which merged into Coral Gables proper in 2007 creating what is now known as "Miami Beach". A number of businesses located near today's intersection of Northwest Second Street NE & Eighth Avenue NW - most notably Philips 66 - grew out of initial business ventures taking place within or adjacent to today's boundaries of both towns: those begun or expanded by local entrepreneurs active before amalgamation date make up much of what still exists within MIAShores while less visible predecessors have disappeared completely; some evidence suggests remaining structures from earlier days may be viscerally sensed but Checkered Tablecloth has yet to document visit
The Miami Shores area was first settled by the Key West Tribe in 1835. The tribe moved to Miami from Cuba in 1838 and started a sawmill on the current site of Coral Gables in 1840. In 1865, A.P. Smith, a wealthy Jacksonville businessman, donated land at Northwest First Avenue and Cutler Road for a town named after him,Miami Beach. The town plat was filed November 3, 1865 and plans were drawn up for construction of a wharf and water tanks but never built because of financial difficulties. In 1886, American Columbia Gas & Electric Company established an electric generating station on Biscayne Bay with workers coming down from Havana to work there until 1926 when it closed down due to competition from Florida Power & Light Company's plant on Grassy Key. In 1917, the US Marines landed at Fort Lauderdale Beach to open up the Everglades National Park to camping and hunting by Americans; this led to the name "Fort Lauderdale Shores" being given to what is now part of Miami Shores
