Miami Shores is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on the east coast of the state. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is located adjacent to Everglades National Park. The name "Miami Shores" comes from an old Spanish word meaning "shoreline." At one time, this shoreline extended from Key Biscayne to Homestead Heights and as far north as Pompano Beach. Today, only a small portion of that original shoreline remains. But what does remain has been around for centuries and its history can be traced back to 1855 when it became part of Spanish Fort Plantation along with much of present-day Miami-Dade County. In 1855, Major José Gutiérrez de la Vega purchased land in what is now downtown MiamiShores from Pedro Menéndez de Avilés y Valdés for $1,000 (). He named his new tract Rancho Indianópolis (today's Old Dixie Highway). In addition to this purchase, Gutiérrez also received 848 acres (323 hectares) of land northeast of today's town center known as Rancho Santa Fe which he donated to the United States government in return for military supplies during the Mexican–American War. That land later became Everglades National Park. Spanish Fort was home to over 20 cannon and served as a garrison until 1898 when it was abandoned due to American expansionism into Southwest Florida on behalf of Cuba during the Spanish–American War. Afterward, much of what is now downtown MiamiShores developed along some railroad tracks that were still in use at that time including parts of today's SoBe district just south of I-95/I-4 exit 191A/US 27AExit 291B

The Miami Shores community was founded in the early 1800s by Spanish explorers who discovered this area on the mainland. The first European settlers were a group of Huguenot refugees who arrived in 1824. They named their new community after theShores of Miami, Florida, which they had seen while visiting their brother island of Hispaniola. The original town was located on South Beach and only lasted for a few years before it was destroyed by a fire. The town's name is still remembered today and is used as a local identifier for the area.
