They named their new town after their brother's home state, Michigan. The brothers built a series of homes on what are now Long Key Drive and Flagler Street, until they sold all their property in 1916 to actor James Stewart who used it for his private estate called "Sunset Beach". In 1924, Stewart bought another 400 acres across the bay from Miami Shores and renamed it "Biscayne Bay". He continued to use Biscayne Bay for his estate until his death in 1953. After his death, the land passed through several hands before being acquired by developer Harry Laughlin in 1963 who turned it into what is today Miami Shores. Since its inception as a small town with limited resources, Miami Shores has made significant contributions to both local and national culture. Its unique blend of Bahamian heritage with Americana has helped make it one of South Florida's most popular tourist destinations. In addition to its wide variety of shops and restaurants, there are also golf courses, beaches, theme parks and museums available within easy reach. The community has developed an active civic structure that helps manage many aspects of its daily operations such as elections (which take place every 10 years), fire safety inspections/maintenance/updates etc.. Miami Shores is a community in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,500 at the 2000 census. It is located on the south side of the Miami River. The community was founded in 1916 by white soldiers who were stationed at Fort Pierce Naval Station. The name "Miami Shores" means "harbor of the blue waves." In 1923, John Sargent and his wife Alice bought land at what is now Miami Beach for $2,000. They named their home after their daughter's birth place, Muskegon Heights in Michigan. The Sargents built a two-story wooden house on a plot that they donated to the town of Miami Beach as part of its first development plan in 1922. In 1933, Colonel James Fenton purchased 2 acres (0.8 hectare) east of mile marker 25 on US 1 from developers Harry Wertheimer and Julius Rosenwald for $25 per acre (1 hectare = 0.50 kilometer). He planned to build an amusement park there with nine rides including a Ferris wheel and other games that would be popular among American servicemen stationed abroad during World War II. However, plans to construct the park were scrapped when war came and Fenton served as military governor of occupied Europe until 1945; he died before it could be completed
Miami Shores was founded by the Tequestas in 1846. The town was named for a bay on the Miami River. The first post office in Miami Shores was opened in 1851. In 1865, the town became attached to the county of Kendall and it remained part of that county until 1957.
