In 1865 Major John Lousiana donated 8 acres (2 hectares) of his property at 6th Avenue Northwest corner Key Biscayne Boulevard to the United States Coast Guard as part of a gift from his late wife Lucy Cogan Lafitte who had been appointed Commodore of American Fishermen's Companyboat NOBLE AFTER her husband's death on December 5th during an Atlantic crossing off Cuba with JOURNEY OF THEIR FIRST CHILD - little—Martha Jane Lafitte—to Jacksonville which was then called Stonington; In 1892 Admiral Jesse Wainwright became Commandant at US Naval Station Miami Beach when Naval Station Stonington closed due to lack of personnel; Wainwright soon moved ashore here where he purchased land which he renamed Fort Lauderdale Beach on January 3rd 1903 for $5 million dollars with intent that this would be America's first naval post card-carrying port -Wainwright Street running from downtown Ft Lauderdale all the way along Broward Blvd becoming A1A or present day 7th Ave N before turning north towards NW 56TH street near Post Office Rd renamed NW 1st Ave until ending up NE 11th Ave at Military Dr E reprising US Nav supply route running parallel except northerly via SW Side streets currently I-95 instead). On October 24th 1909 Ernest Hemingway wrote about "this lovely bayou country dotted with white bungalows" while staying at Beaches Hotel in Coral Gables: "I could see ships moored off shore both inside and outside harbor – they looked like huge dolls sunk into the water—It seemed impossible that such a beautiful place could have so few people living within its limits ...Nearby we saw two black mules being led away by their owners […] They looked very sad." Many locals abandoned their homes during World War II as military activity increased around MIAB (Manned Intermediate Area Base): "Some residents who had nothing better to do decided they didn't want their homes taken away so they set up tents right on top of what used to be their houses", according to historian Karen Blumenson: "Many women went into hiding because they were scared their husbands or sons might be drafted". After World War II ended things returned back to normal as most residents decided against returning again: "There wasn't really much enthusiasm among many local people either --- especially since almost everything had been taken away during wartime -- save maybe some materials used in building infrastructure replacement projects [...] Most South Floridians simply forgot aboutMIAMI SHORES [...] until recent decades when interest revived thanks largely to books such as ' readablehistoryofmiamishore' written by local residents [Karen Blumenson]." As mentioned earlier MIAB served as America's first naval post card carrying port between Doral and Ft Lauderdale--a service which ceased on February 17th 1958 whenUS Naval Station Guantanamo surpassed NAS Miami Beach as America's main naval station--though various submarine chases still took place out base using submarines transferred from NAS Key West [which closed March 1959]: USS COOPER Class Destroyer escort ship assigned quarters here Oct 1944 thru Feb 1945; USS GOODWIN Class Amphibious Tanker assigned Apr 1945 thru Mar 1946….and USS HAWKEYE Class Attack Submarine assignments through Dec 1946…..the last operational use being Dec 1947 when COOPER decommissioned here Nov 1948″ During World War II NAS Guantanamo also served as Headquarters for Rear Admiral Harry Wilkinson III Commander Caribbean Fleet Air Force— commander despatches air forces available FORT MIGRANT program flying Intelligence patrols & assistance US shipping convoys operating out Of Cuban Waters……..during peacetime Headquarters shifted ashore at Miramar…and later relocated yet again briefly at Port Everglades before finally settling permanently here May 1951″ After WWII Headquarters remained based locally mostly unchanged though concurrently Commander Caribbean Fleet Air Forces moved uptown briefly Sep 1949 – Jul 1950 then permanently Here Aug 1951 until command was reassigned Jan 1955 eternally anchoring At Miramar» Today Maritime Security Force Detachment counted amongst permanent staff responsible for activities surrounding Naval Station«MIAMI SHORE COMMISSIONER OF NAVAL SERVICES RICHARD SULLIVAN signed original deed dated 10/24/1909 setting boundaries for shore dedication» Upon completion date under new name 4 days later —> Redevelopment Plan became effectiveNov 91959 MIAMI SHORE CITY CODE AND Zoning Ordinance effectiveDec 12 1959 Official Namechanged ToMiamiShores FL
