Miami Shores is a town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area. The name "Miami Shores" was given to the town by Rear Admiral James W. Farragut while he was Commandant of the Marine Corps' Eastern District during World War II. Farragut had been ordered to find a place where Marines could summer and drill without fear of enemy attack. He found that there would be no danger because anyenemy landings would take place on an uninhabited barrier island across from Ponce de Leon Bay which formed part of Cuba's northern coast at that time. Farragut named the island after his uncle who fought in Mexico and also lived near Key Biscayne in Southwest Florida when it was first settled as a Spanish fishing village called Villa de la Vega de los Rosales in 1539. In 1836, José María Fernández y Valdés, one of Spain's last vestiges of colonial rule over Cuba decided to move his family and their belongings from Villa de la Vega derosales to Santiago de Cuba so they could escape Spanish tyranny; however, they never left Santiago and continued living there until 1898 when they moved again to Miami due to congressional hostility towards Spain following its defeat in the Mexican-American War. For many years thereafter "Villa" served as both address for residents of South Miami (the portion north of First Street) and as an unofficial symbol for Cuban exile Residents of all ages who owned or leased property within walking distance of their home were often called "Villa". In 1958 real estate developer Marvin Karp met with Fidel Castro while he vacationed on Key Biscayne and purchased some beachfront property overlooking South Miami Beach which became known as Cheyenne Park Naval Air Station ("Marine Air StationKey Biscayne"), then North Key Largo Air Station before finally coming up with Miami Shores; Commodore James Wessels who officiated at Keysairport renamed it Coral Gables NAS after Mrs. Karp's late husband Ambassador Dean Acheson – thus fulfilling Virgil Wright's prophecy that "Coral Gables would become a port city." The original three airfields: Naval Auxiliary Base Noord (later Fort Lauderdale Field), Flagler Field ( later Homestead AFB )and Misawa AF became Cooper Island Naval Air Station - now US Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville - providing military airlift/transportation support for law enforcement operations during peacetime as well as combat operations during wartime conditions including Operation Neptune’s Spear which lasted from November 25th through December 8th 1941 . Miami Shores was founded in 1903 by Ishmael Reed. The site is now a census-designated place (CDP) and part of the Miami metropolitan area. It is located on the shore of Biscayne Bay, just east of downtown Miami. The community was named after Miami Beach, which at that time featured shaded beaches, dramatic cliffs and fine architecture. The name stuck and today's residents are descended from many who lived there during its early years. Reed built a small wooden shack on the beach where he would spend his days fishing, sunbathing and trading goods with local fishermen. In 1916, he developed what is now known as Marlins Pointe into a seaside resort with luxurious hotels, restaurants and shops. With the advent of World War I, the demand for military personnel's housing skyrocketed in South Florida so Reed built additional homes along what is now Biscayne Boulevard for servicemen and their families. During Prohibition Cuban refugees began arriving in large numbers to work in local breweries, meatpacking plants and other businesses; this attracted more people to Miami Shores which blossomed into one of South Florida's most diverse communities during that time period. In 1951 Coral Gables became incorporated as an unincorporated community within Miami Shores; it officially joined the city limits on December 1st of that year. On July 15th 1957 Hurricane Wilma hit south Florida leaving extensive damage throughout much of south central Miami; including much of Coral Gables which quickly rebuilt thanks to donated resources from nearby neighborhoods including Coconut Grove, Wynwood Heights and Flagler Park/Dolphin Key Villages
On December 12, 1959, Miami Shores was incorporated as a town in Miami-Dade County. The first residents of the town were Orville and Wilma Beardsley. The first store in Miami Shores was the Hardee's restaurant on Northwest 1st Street. In 1961, the Second Baptist Church was built and the first post office opened in Miami Shores. In 1966, Coral Gables was annexed into MiamiShores and it became a part of the newly formed city ofMiami. The population of Miami Shores peaked at 6,000 people in 1970 but then dropped to 3,500 by 1980 due to development within the town limits only. However, there has been an increase in population since then with over 10,000 people now living in MiamiShore
