The name "Miami Shores" comes from that it is located on a shore which used to be an important shipping point for sugarcane and other crops in the early 20th century. In 1903, city officials decided to change the name of the community because they felt its original name would insure continued prosperity in the area. In 1963, Miami Shores voters passed a resolution calling for annexation by Broward County because they felt their economy would suffer without an influx of tax dollars from South Florida's largest county. The vote was successful and Broward County annexed Miami Shores in 1966; however, many residents still keep their ties to Miami Shores through visits and business dealings with their friends and family members who live there. The Census Bureau has designated this CDP as primarily residential; however, some businesses and services are available throughout the community including: a high school (Saint Vincent de Paul), grocery stores (Grocery Outlet Store), doctor offices (Brown & Williamson HealthCare), post office (Nebraska Post Office), and churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). There are also several cafes/bars within walking distance of most activities such as restaurants or nightlife options.
