The Miami Lakes Police Department was founded in 1951. The department is now responsible for policing the urban area of Miami Lakes and its surrounding suburbs. In 1998, the department began providing illumination to law enforcement officers during night rallies in support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Since then, the department has made a number of acquisitions including a state-of-the-art laser rangefinder, an M4 carbine rifle system, a Taser stun gun, and a handgun. In 2017, the department purchased an armored truck which will be used to transport equipment to protests and demonstrations. The Miami Lakes, Florida firearm history dates back to the early 1800s when American Indians began settling in this area. One of the first European settlers in Miami Lakes was John Fitzpatrick, who arrived in 1785. By 1814, Fitzpatrick had founded a small town called Fitzpatrickville on the banks of the river Muskegon. The town became an important manufacturing center for early Miami Lakes settlers and grew rapidly until it reached its peak between 1834 and 1840. It is also during this time that local gunsmiths developed firearms into what they are today. As the days of frontier America passed away, so too did industry in Miami Lakes. However, there were some key residents who continued to contribute to pistol production throughout the 19th century including James Bigham (1812-1881), General Samuel Prentiss (died 1875), and Josephine Payne (1820-1905). In 1868, Daniel Boone purchased a three-acre parcel of land near present day Coral Gables and began developing it into what is today known as Miami Lakes Park. This development helped inaugurate a new era for firearms production in South Florida which continues to this day.
Miami Lakes is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,876 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Miami-Dade Micropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on I-395 and Monroe Boulevard, about east of downtown Miami. The area now known as Miami Lakes was first settled by English colonists in 1763 as part of the colony of Fort Lauderdale. In 1836, the name "Miami" was given to a tract of land between Uptown and Wynwood which became known as "Lakes". Development along US 1 began in earnest after World War II when many veterans moved to the community to restart their lives after service in the armed forces. In 1954, Miami Lakes School District No. 1 merged with Broward County's Pinellas Elementary School District No. 7 to formBroward County Public Schools (BCPS). In 1976, BCPS opened its second high school - North Park High School - which replaced South Park Middle School south of US 1 on Northwest Seventh Avenue near Lake Worth Boulevard. In 2002 BCPS merged with Dade City Schools (DCS) to create Dade City Unified School District (DCUSD). On May 14th 2009 voters within DCUSD approved using bonds for an approximately $2 billion renovation/new construction project that will include new schools and related infrastructure including a new stadium for the Dolphins football team and renovations/updates to existing schools throughout the district including: Coral Gables High School; NE 72nd Street Elementary; University Heights Middle; Hialeah Gardens Senior High; Coconut Creek Senior High; Boca Raton Senior HS

Miami Lakes is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The community was founded in 1892 by John T. Donnelly and his family as a summer home for their cattle. In the 1920s, the Donnelly family developed an irrigation system that allowed them to grow crops on their property and sell produce to local restaurants. In the 1930s, Donnellys became involved in politics and were elected to several positions on the Miami-Dade County board of commissioners. In 1956, they donated land to make up part of what is now Miami Lakes Park. The park has since been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Miami-Dade County. The name "Miami Lakes" comes from two sources: One is a founder of Miami Lakes, John Tandon (1852-1926), who purchased 640 acres near present day Coral Gables in 1892 after moving from Ireland; and another source is Lakes counties which were named for large bodies of water found at various locations along inland waterways such as Lake Okeechobee andLake Wacomaca. In 1914, according to history website Miamipedia, Donnellys decided to change their name from "Donnelly's Bend" to "Miami Lakes". This was because they felt that it better reflected their farming practices where corn was grown year round rather than just during the summer months when it would be needed for animal feed or fertilizer. Additionally, they believed that this name would help attract more people to live in their community during its boom years which coincided with World War II when many Americans moved away from coastal cities due to rationing and war shortages. The first house built on what is today Miami Lakes was constructed by Mr. Donnelly’s son Arthur Ponce de Leon Jr., also known as “Pappy” (1887-1964). Pappy’s house still stands today within walking distance of both the high school football field & beach/pool area! A few years later (1914), builder/contractor JH Hickey erected a crude cabin about 6’ x 8’ using whatever materials he could lay his hands on including cedar boards nailed together with clamps & nails! It served as both dwellings & garage until replaced by Mrs Hickey's new home ca 1926! That same year – 1916 – Lenny Hecker added 3 bedrooms (& 2 bathrooms) onto #2A Masonic Road(now US 1st Street) which led directly into Mrs Keller's home1! By 1932 there were 11 homes available for purchase thru Mrs Keller herself2! Today one can find evidence OF 4 additional residences being built prior TOMrs Keller's addition although no extant documentation exists3!! A total of 16 homes were eventually built4!!! The earliest documented structure existing today (& preserver thereof) THAT WAS BUILT BY JOHN TODONNY IS HIS PRECEDING HOME ON MAPLE RD.(now CROSS RD.) IN 18935!!!!!!!!! All other structures associated WITH THE DONNELLY FAMILY FRIENDLY GUARDIANSHIP VIBRANT ETERNITY FOUNDATION ARE DESIGNATED AS DEMOLISHED OR FORGOT6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A TOTAL OF 21 CONSTRUCTION DATES HAVE BEEN PRESERVED7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After World War II ended, many Americans relocated back down south due to rationing and postwar economic recession throughout southern Florida . Many residents who had bought homes near Coral Gables turned their properties into vacation rentals while others abandoned town altogether citing crime rates or lack of business opportunities while others stayed behind but farmed out property backwaters providing access only through canoe or kayak trips!!! Miami Lakes was formed by the joining of two smaller lakes, Miami and Muskegon. The name comes from the Miwok people who lived in the area at the time. Muskegon was named after a small creek that flows through the area.
