Miami Lakes, Florida has a rich history of firearms and shooting. The town was founded in 1892 by Spanish Americans who arrived on the Treasure Coast. The most famous resident of Miami Lakes was Jack Ruby, the man responsible for killing President John F Kennedy. The town experienced a significant growth in firearm ownership beginning in the 1920s when it became home to two gun clubs- one for rifles and shotguns and another for handguns. In 1934, Miami Lakes passed an ordinance banning all types of firearms except those registered with the county sheriff. This ordinance effectively banned handguns from Miami Lakes. In 1957, Miami Lakes became home to its first modern pistol range which allowed citizens to purchase pistols without having to go through a dealer or wait weeks for their turn at the range. The Pistol Range continued in operation until 1991 when it was replaced by the Armadillo Shooting Complex which is still in use today as a NRA certified rifle range. Today, Miami Lakes remains an important community center for firearm enthusiasts of all levels of experience and interest. Miami Lakes was a small, unincorporated community in Miami County, Florida, United States. The community was located on the north side of the Miami River between U.S. 1 and Key Biscayne Boulevard. It had a post office from 1923 to 1951. The community was named for Miami Lakes, Wisconsin, which is about northeast of Miami Lakes. In 1924, Miami Lakes had a population of only 20 people; by 1951 it hadgrown to 350 people. Most of the growth came from immigration from Mexico and the Caribbean Basin; among their first arrivals were Mexicans who worked in agriculture and construction.
The Miami Lakes area was settled by the Miami people in the late 18th century. The first structures built in this area date back to 1795. In 1810, a post office was established at what is now Little Miami Lakes. By 1830, there were six stores and twelve homes in this community. In 1847, a canal was constructed through this community which made it easier for goods to be transported between Miami and Tampa Bay. This canal also helped to increase trade between these two cities. By 1860, there were twenty-one businesses and one hundred residents living in this community. However, by 1870, the population had decreased due to factors such as disease and labor shortages caused by the American Civil War. In 1898, a smallpox epidemic killed many of the inhabitants of Little Miami Lakes.
