One of these companies was Samuel Colt, who manufactured firearms such as pistols and rifles. In 1849, Colt leased land in Miami Lakes from Jno. Sikes for $150 per year. This lease allowed Colt to manufacture firearms there for both export and domestic use. The first rifle that was made at this site was called the “Samuel Colt Rifle”. It was a single shot rifle that used a revolving cylinder to fire rounds. However, this rifle was not very successful and did not sell well. over time, other companies started manufacturing rifles in Miami Lakes including Winchester Arms Company, Browning Arsenal Company, Mossberg & Sons Machine Shop, Savage Arms Corporation, and Remington Arms Company. Each company produced their own type of firearm that suited their specific needs and preferences. For example, Winchester produced shotguns while Browning developed assault weapons such as the Ruger American Rifle series of handguns which became popular after World War II. Eventually, all of these firms merged into one company called Remington Firearms Corporation in 1997). Throughout its history in Miami Lakes, Rifle stocks has been an important part of Floridians’ gun culture and tradition! The Miami Lakes Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1912. It is the oldest rifle and pistol club in Miami Lakes, Florida. The club originally met at a local park to shoot Model 1892 rifles and pistols. In 1916, the club moved to its present location on Northwest Fourth Street in Miami Lakes. The club has been meeting continuously since then.
Miami Lakes is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered by Midtown to the east and north, Overtown to the west, and Kendallville to the south. Miami Lakes is primarily an agricultural community with a small manufacturing sector. The first people to live in Miami Lakes were pioneers who came from Illinois in 1836. In 1868, John Fenton built a cabin on what is now Main Street in Miami Lakes. By 1870, there were about 20 dwellings in Miami Lakes. A post office was established at Miami Lakes in 1872 and operated until 1907. In 1902, Alonzo White opened a grocery store and general store called "the White House". From 1903 through 1916, Pritchard Gorman ran a bakery called "Gorman's Bakery". In 1916, Mr. Gorman sold his business to Hidetaka Shimizu and began running it as "Shimizu's Bake Shop". From 1917 through 1933, Mrs. Jeanette Preuss ran the grocery store which became known as "Preuss' Grocery". In 1933, Mrs. Preuss sold her business to Rufus Welch who operated it as "Welch's Drug Store" until 1961 when he combined his stores into one location under the name of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Village Pharmacy & Supermarket.. After that year's merging spree by various supermarkets throughout South Florida (and elsewhere), USDA Village Pharmacy closed its doors for good on October 1st 2001 after more than 60 years of operation! Community members rallied around local restaurateur Manny Diaz Bandello and transformed him into owner/operator of what would become known as MIALakes Casino restaurant & nightlife complex….A ribbon cutting ceremony occurred on November 25th 2006 following successful completion of $2 million renovation project!!! Now able to seat over 2200 guests nightly on six floors…..MIAMI LAKES CASINO has added another feather unto its cap…………………..

Miami Lakes was a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2000 census. It is located on the southern edge of the city of Miami. The community was founded in 1922 by Reuben and Esther Lerner as a small agricultural community along Miami Lakes Boulevard. The name "Lakes" came from an old Indian word meaning "watershed." In 1925, Cleveland Sawyer purchased and developed the area into a resort town with swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses and other recreational amenities for wealthy visitors from South Florida. The area now known as Miami Lakes became part ofMiami in 1959 when it was annexed by the city of Miami. The annexation ended up creating some tension between the two cities because Lake's residents were considered wealthier than those living in neighbouring Overtown which had been annexed earlier that year. In 1963, newly elected Mayor Manuel López Miralle ordered that all businesses within city limits be closed because he believed that business owners were using their businesses to avoid paying sales taxes. Businesses reopened butMiralle vetoed any new development until after his inauguration on January 25th which caused some conflict between him and developers who wanted to keep developing what they saw as Miralle's landonneership program
Miami Lakes was founded in 1884 by J.W. Kendall and John Larkin as a water supply for the growing city of Miami Beach. The initial location, near the intersection of Northwest Seventh Street and Northwest Eighth Avenue, was difficult to find because of its location on high ground. In 1886, Kendall and Larkin sold their interest in the lakes to Wm. Bendix Jr., who built a dam across the Kissimmee River to provide water for the community. In 1888, Miami Lakes became an incorporated town with a population of about 150 residents. The first school in Miami Lakes was built on West Second Street in 1890. A store and post office were also established soon after. In 1895, Kendall donated 10 acres (4 hectares) of land at Northeast Third Drive and Northwest First Avenue for use as a parkland . The first home in Miami Lakes was built on this new property in 1896 by James Caulfield . By 1909, there were over 100 homes in Miami Lakes . As development increased along Southwest Fourth Street from NE First Ave to NW Second Ave., businesses began moving into streets that had been vacated by residents when they moved out of their homes during World War I or when annexation occurred within city boundaries
