The Miami Lakes Scope was very popular and helped increase sales for shotgun shells by 50%. By 1925, there were over 20 businesses selling rifles and shotguns across Miami Lakes.
Miami Lakes is a small city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 13,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. On October 10, 1853, Daniel Webster and his wife Anna built a log cabin on what is now Miami Lakes Boulevard in what is now Overtown. They named their new town after Anna's family home in Scotland – "Lakes" being Scottish for "creek". A post office called Lakes was opened in 1855, and the town name changed to Miami on April 15, 1861. In 1865 it became a county seat when Dade County was organized from parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties. On November 3, 1904, an act of Congress created Miami City (later renamed Homestead), which included all of present-day Miami Lakes except parts of east and west Riley Road which formed part of Overton Heights until that area was annexed by Coral Gables in 1928. By 1930 the population had reached 20,000; but World War II caused many residents to leave for military service or other reasons and by 1945 it had fallen to 9,500 people. In 1959 the Uptown Shopping Center opened adjacent to then-new shopping areas along I-95 northbound between Everglades Boulevard (now US 1) and Kendall Drive; this made downtown Miami less busy with more space for shopping. The center closed around 1990 as much shopping moved away from downtown because Interstate 95 was widened southward two miles (3 km). Downtown businesses that were too close to I-95 ¶ such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney (), Kmart (), Safeway (), Dunkin' Donuts ()) also lost business during this time period as developers built highrise apartments nearby instead of ground level stores or strip malls like those seen today on Northwest Second Avenue (). Miami Lakes is a small community located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was founded on November 1, 1909 by Orville and Wilbur Wright as a summer home for their family. The Miami Lakes Flying School operated from 1911 until it closed its doors in 1926. That same year, the Wrights started construction on what would become their famous airport – Miami International Airport. On January 6, 1929, they succeeded in completing their first airfield takeoff and landing. The airport has been continuously used ever since then by both commercial airlines and military aircrafts alike. When Hurricane Andrew hit Florida on October 24th of that year, the airport was one of several impacted areas. Fortunately, no lives were lost as a result of the storm but heavy damage was done to both the airport and surrounding homes. After the storm had passed, work began on rebuilding Miami Lakes which progressed quickly thanks to donations from many people in the community. Today, Miami Lakes is an extremely vibrant community with plenty of cultural activities available for visitors to enjoy!
The Miami Lakes region in southeast Florida was first settled by the Muscogee Indians in the late 18th century. The area became part of what is now Miami-Dade County in 1913. In 1924, federal troops burned down the Seminole village of Moxee on the banks of the Miami Lakes after a Seminole chief tried to cross over into Florida from Alabama. The event is known as the Moxee Incident.
