Miami Lakes is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is adjacent to downtown Miami. The name originates from the Miami River which runs through it. The village was founded in 1898 by pioneers John Prentice and his family as a result of their land purchase from the Kissimmee Tribe of Indians. In 1907, the village became one of seven villages that made up the newly created Dade County after it was annexed from Palm Beach County. In 1959, construction began on what would become Miami Lakes' first shopping mall called "Mall of America". The mall opened in 1961 and became an anchor store for Sears Holdings Corporation until its sale to JCPenney in 1997. Mall of America closed down in 2013 but has been redeveloped into several high-end apartment buildings including One Village Center and Embassy Suites by Hilton Hotel & Residence Tower II.

Miami Lakes is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Hollywood–Ft. Lauderdale Combined Statistical Area. The community was named after Miami Lakes on Miami's west side. A post office was established at Miami Lakes in 1908, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1941. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 10,681 people, 4,856 households, and 3,636 families residing within the CDP. The population density was 1,604 people per square mile (531/km²). There were 5,912 housing units at an average density of 613 per square mile (253/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2% of the population.
The Miami Lakes area was first settled in the early 1800s by European immigrants. The area was named after the Miami River, which flows through it. In 1821, a group of Dutch settlers founded a small community on the banks of the Miami River. The settlers called their settlement "Hendrickson's Ferry." By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Hendrickson's Ferry. In 1836, a group of British settlers arrived in the Miami Lakes area and named their settlement "Finch's Mills." By 1840, there were over 150 people living in Finch's Mills. In 1851, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and renamed it Florida Statehood. The Miami Lakes region became part of Florida Statehood.
