Miami Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The community was platted in 1924 by J.P. O'Neill and his brother, John P. O'Neill Jr., as "Newland", after their estate in Palm Beach County near Newland Lake. They named it for Brendan Behan, an Irish nationalist who had been imprisoned in America while on trial for treason during World War I. The first post office opened in 1925 and remained open until 1959; its last name change was to "Miami Lakes". The Miami Lakes School District was founded in 1927 and became the Miami Park District in 1957; it merged with the city of Doral Schools district in 2003 to form the present school district which is headquartered at 6666 NW 117th Street. Most of today's Miami Lakes originally consisted of unincorporated areas annexed by either Kendall or Doral from time to time during development of those communities as they grew larger than what could be accommodated within their original borders without creating municipalities themselves; this process continued until all but two blocks of Northwest 327th Street were annexed by Kendall on July 1, 1984 following annexation of , then Doral on November 3 that year when . In 1990, portions of Northwest 327th Street east of SW 167th Avenue were annexed by , becoming known as "Mallard". In 1992, portions east of SW 167th Avenue were annexed by Lighthouse Pointe and became known as "Lauderdale". In 2000 additional portions east and north of SW 167th Avenue were annexed by south from . On July 1, 2004 all but two blocks westbound on NW 327thStreet were annexed into Kendall upon annexation of Coral Springs/Fort Lauderdale Annexation Agency – making Miami Lakes a municipality once again despite being an unincorporated area since 1924! The remaining blocks are still considered part of Kendall because they fall within its borders entirely but are now administered separately through their respective school districts: Miamidade Comprehensive High School eastBound onNW 327thStreetand Miamidade Elementary School northBound on NW 327thStreet). With these changes came new streetscape choices including widened sidewalks and bike lanes along NE 127TH STREET between US 27A & US 27E

Miami Lakes is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by George Washington Wilkinson and his wife on a tract of land east of nearby Jupiter Avenue in 1904. In 1912, Wilkinson donated the village name to Miami Lakes Golf Course that he had also founded. In 1926, Miami Lakes incorporated as a town under the name "Miami Heights". In 1959, it changed its name to "Miami Lakes". The population peaked at 12,500 in 1970 but has declined since then due to various factors including suburbanization and the recession of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Today, Miami Lakes has a population density of just over per square mile (approximately ). The climate in this area is predominantly warm summer weather with some rain during winter months. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Miami Lakes has a humid subtropical climate with abbreviated severe hot season from May through September; abbreviated dry season from October through April; moderate spring time average temperature; copious rainfall all year round; high humidity most months throughout year; occasional thunderstorms annually
In the early 1800s, Miami Lakes was a small Indian village on the banks of the St. Johns River. The people of Miami Lakes were descendants of the Seminole tribe. In 1824, Captain John Hawkins, who had been commanded by United States Marine Colonel James Wilkinson when he explored Florida, located and named Miami Lakes after his home in London, England. One year later, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered this area and named it Las Casas Key because he thought it would be an excellent site for a naval station. The United States acquired sovereignty over Florida from Spain in1821 and began construction of Fort Godfrey on nearby Anacostia Key. American traders established their presence in the area during this time and brought goods such as salt pork and cotton to market. The first European to visit Miami Lakes was FrenchCaptain Nicolas-Jacques Conte on May 7, 1795 while exploring what is now Jacksonville Beach for France’s Royal Navy squadron under Admiral Jean-Baptiste Bonsecour. On December 3rd, 1796 Father Pierre Laclau arrived at Miami Lakes with twenty Catholic missionaries from St Laurentsur Mer (present day Pointe Claire) on board his ship "L’Esprit de Saint-Jean." On January 6th 1800 Father Gaspard Chateaubriand landed at Miami Lakes with eighty fighters including seven cannons manned by volunteer soldiers from Havana; however no permanent settlement was made until 1824 when Captain Hawkins erected a log cabin near present day Old Glades Boulevard/Miami Springs Road after being recommended by General William Troup who had supervised the expedition that found Pensacola Bay
