At its peak, the line ran about 1,600 miles (2,100 km) through Florida and Ohio. The railroad attracted settlers who built homes around Miamisburg Lake, which became known as "Miamisburg." In 1915, when part of Glades County was absorbed into Broward County, Miamisburg Township was carved out of Miami-Dade County to become part of that county's new municipality. In 1928, voters ratified a referendum calling for the creation of an independent village within Miamisburg Township named after General John Pershing – now called Hialeah – because he had played an important role in American military campaigns during World War I. That same year, Hialeah incorporated as a city under state law. After years of development work by local officials and private investors alike, Miamisburg Village opened its doors to residents on July 1, 1978. The first people to live in what is now Miami Lakes were the Arawaks, who lived around Lake Jackson. In 1513, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto visited the area and named it Los Mocos. In 1835, a group of United States soldiers under General Andrew Jackson passed through this area on their way to survey an army route through Florida. They called it Río de Janeiro because they thought it looked like Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. When they reached Río Key, they realized that it wasn't Rio de Janeiro but Miami Lakes because its water was so clear!
