Miami Lakes was a small, isolated community located on the banks of the Miami River in South Miami-Dade County, Florida. It began to be developed as early as 1892, when the land was purchased by J.P. Morgan and others from the Seminole Indian tribe for $1,000. The name "Miami Lakes" is derived from Miami Creek which flows through the community. In 1898, US cavalry general George Armstrong Custer fought his final battle at Hialeah Park in Miami Lakes after being shot by Native American tracker Cheyenne Arapaho Chief Sitting Bull. The Battle of Hialeah Park lasted for three hours and was one of the bloodiest engagements in United States history. After Custer's death, many people came to visit his remains at Hialeah Park Cemetery and also founded Custer Battlefield National Monument near Hialeah Park in 2003 to remember this important event in US military history.
