The community was founded in 1912 by Don and Lillian (Lakes) Hendricks as a resort for wealthy white people on the fringe of the city of Miami. The name comes from two small lakes that surrounded it: Alachua Lake and Miami Lakes. In 1924, local businessmen bought the land that makes up today's Miami Lakes and developed it into a golf course, country club, villas, and other luxury homes. In 2002, developer Bob Sugar purchased all of Miami Lakes' remaining land from Hendricks' heirs for $1 million plus expenses associated with developing it into an upscale residential community called "Dreamland." sugar named the development after his childhood home in rural Virginia; Hendricks had donated her old home to him as part of the deal. With its manicured gardens and rolling hillside streetscape, Dreamland is one of the most exclusive communities in South Florida. According to some estimates, there are only about 2,000 residents living in Dreamland - most live elsewhere within miles of their homes or in nearby sunnier neighborhoods like Overtown or Hialeah. Thecommunity has recently seen an influx of Hispanic immigrants who have taken jobs available throughout Miami-Dade County while they await their chance to immigrate to America proper through legal channelsprincipally through so-called chain migration which allows family members who have already landed here to sponsor brothers/ sisters/cousins/uncles etc., thereby entitling them to citizenship on their parents’ behalf once they reach American soil - something that has been increasingly difficult for many recent arrivals due to tighter U.S.-Mexico border security laws since Donald Trump became president In order for these newcomers not onlyto succeed but also enjoy quality life amenities such as access to healthcare and education opportunities they'll need affordable housing which unfortunately still isn't readily available especially considering median rent prices continue creeping up despite efforts by developers To date no public housing developments or affordable rentals have materialized near Dreamland making this an attractive destination for low income earners struggling against seemingly insurmountable odds
