Miami Lakes is a census-designated place located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Miami-Dade Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Miami Lakes" was given to the community by Colonel John H. Laughlin in 1915 while he was a superintendent of public works for Miami County and then serving as mayor of Coral Gables. Thecommunity derived its name from two small lakes that dot the area: Crystal Lake and Homestead Lake. The first settlement in Miami Lakes took place in 1907 when Edward Waring settled on what is now Northwest Fourth Avenue just east of Northwest First Street. In 1912, Harry Bond purchased land northeast of present day Southwest Eighth Avenue and built his home, which still stands today as Bond Place House. In 1916, Vernon Paige became one of the first white proprietors to own property within range of Kendall Airport when he bought 640 acres (250 ha) southeast of present day hijacking spot known as “Airport Woods” from Driggs Field Corporation for $5 per acre ($/ha). This site would become known as Airport Meadows due to later development there by airport officials. By 1919 four families had moved into their homes: Tomlinson family (#1), Crouse family (#2), Beardsley family (#3), and Cook family (#4). Captain John Fenton leased 350 acres (16 ha) near present day Northwest Third Street corner with Coral Gables Boulevard fromDriggs Field Corporation on December 6, 1922 for $10 per year ($/$/ha). This parcel would become known colloquially as "Fenton's Farm". On January 12, 1923 Charles Bickerton leased an additional 400 acres (24 ha) along Northeast Seventh Avenue fromDriggs Field Corporation for $25 per year ($/$/ha). This parcel becameknown formally as "Bickerton's Estate". From these initial sites about 100 people assembled to take advantage of water rights and survey potential holdings totaling . These early settlers did not build permanent homes until after World War II when developers began purchasing tracts near Kendall Airport primarily because they needed access to airmail service offered by the military during World War II. By 1946 there were 454 residents living in Miami Lakes; this number would grow significantly by 1960 when annexation made it a full-fledged village under then new county government boundaries

Miami Lakes was a small community in Miami County, Florida until it was annexed by the city of Miami in 1907. The name is thought to be derived from the Creek word "miam" meaning "pigeon" or "to pluck." The community site is located on a tiny peninsula jutting into Biscayne Bay. The first recorded mention of Miami Lakes dates back to 1824 when Captain David Fryer noted that he had passed through the area and named one of his ships after the small town. In 1837, surveyor John Dixon found a grant for 1,500 acres (500 ha) at present-day Miami Lakes. A post office called Miami Lakes was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1898, developer Julius Rosenwald purchased 4,000 acres (2 km2) of land near present day Kendall Beach and planned to build an artificial bay which would provide cooling water for his steel plants. However, funding never came through and Rosenwald sold the property in 1900 to J.P. Morgan & Co., who renamed it Coconut Grove Boulevard after their main competitor in sugar production - Coca ColaCola). A year later, construction began on what is now One Park Avenue within Miami Lakes proper; this became home to both American Electric Power Company's Busch Stadium (now Marlins Park) as well as First National Bank Tower before being acquired by Sun Life Financial Corporation in 1957 and becoming part of its Coral Gables complex. After years of neglect due to lack of development interest and competition from nearby cities such as Coral Gables and West Palm Beach, Miami Lakes finally saw some commercial exploitation with the establishment of a movie theater at One Park Avenue in 1965; this led to increased population growth which caused problems with overflow from the theater's facilities onto adjacent streets leading up towards One Park Avenue itself which eventually posed danger for pedestrians walking between those two areas. In response to these concerns two new apartment buildings were constructed on either side of One Park Avenue - Villa Linda Apartments on the east side and River Oaks Towers on the west side - effectively ending any hope thatMiami Lakes might become cohesive again since those properties are still used today as housing developments. In 2002-2003 renovation work began on what would become known as “The Gateway” project – an ambitious redevelopment plan designed to bring much-needed attention to Main Street between US 1/State Road 27/Northeast 10th Street – bolstering economic vitality while creating new jobs opportunities along with enhancing public access along that corridor throughout downtown Miami Gardens
