Miami Lakes was a small community in Miami-Dade County, Florida, located west of the city of Miami. The community was founded in the early 1920s by a group of Italian Americans who had fled Mussolini's Italy. The name "Milk Lakes" comes from a local dairy farm where many of these immigrants worked. The community began to decline after World War II, as more Italians and other Latino families moved into the area. However, it slowly regained its former popularity during the late 1960s and 1970s as the Miami Dolphins football team played its home games there. In recent years, however, Miami Lakes has experienced a dramatic increase in crime and social unrest due to annexation by Doral development company.
