Miami Lakes, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. It is located on the banks of the Miami River and it has a population of around 2,500. The name "Lakes" comes from Spanish meaning "ponds". The town was founded in 1907 by James H. Baker and named after his father-in-law who was also the founder of Baker Chemical Company in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1927, Miami Lakes became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five trustees. In 1990, Miami Lakes merged with neighbouring unincorporated communities of Cutler Lake and Weequahic to form the city of Cutler Lake Village. Miami Lakes is a suburb of Tampa, Florida. The community was created in 1955 when the Miami-Dade County line was extended to include part of what is now the city of Clearwater. Miami Lakes was a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Miami Lakes" comes from two small villages in central Floridas - Milford and Gladesville - which were merged to form one village in 1892 when they were both annexed by Miami Township. The first post office at Miami Lakes was established on November 12, 1893. At that time it had a population of just 10 people. In 1902, a group of businessmen bought land east of the present-day site of Miami Lakes and began to build what would become the first shopping center in South Florida. They named their new development "Milford Shopping Center." In 1911 they introduced drive-in theatres to the area and renamed it "Gladesville Shopping Center." By 1921, all but two of the original participants in the shopping center's early years had left or been replaced by other companies that invested in or took over its operations: Sears Roebuck & Co., which became Sears Corporation; Jardine Matheson & Co., which became Jardine Hutton & Sons Ltd.; and Allied Canals Company (later American Canals Corp.), which became A&P FoodMart Incorporated. The last company to invest in or take over operation of Gladesville Shopping Center was Kress Brothers Department Store Company, who operated it until 1978 when it closed its doors for good after years of decline due to competition from larger grocery stores across South Florida and better retail locations within commuting distance for shoppers in nearby Doral and Kendall townships. A number of sponsorships helped keep Gladesville Shopping Center open through these troubled times: The Salvation Army donated $5,000 towards construction; Broward County contributed $10,000 towards management; local businesses donated materials such as lumber and fixtures; power came from Coconut Creek Municipal Utility District providing electricity until 1976; and donations from individuals such as Mrs. Lillian Biddlemester funded repairs totaling $100,000 during those years before closure. While many smaller businesses either closed up shop or changed hands multiple times throughout this period due to consolidation among south Florida's largest retailers (the mall's landlords), some notable exceptions include ABC Video Sales who continued operations until 1984 while also using some former Kress Brothers space; Radio Shack moved into former Macy’s space vacated by Seacoast Mall before closing down there permanently three years later;and JCPenney opened their doors shortly after A&P vacated Gladesville with an initial sales floor area much larger than any currently extant store within this vicinity despite having little competition outside Doral/Kendall areas at that time! In 1978 Kress Brothers Department Store Company shuttered its doors for good after more than 50 years operating inside MIA lakes mall! This event marks one milestone among many during MIA lakes history including several hurricanes that have visitedduring this timeframe including Ike (1955), Patsy Cline (1959), Wilbur Wright (1962) , Ronald Reagan (1981) , AND Katrina hit New Orleans on September 29th 2005!!!!
Miami Lakes was originally located in Monroe County, Florida. It was annexed by Miami in 1903, and became a city in 1912. In 1924, it became part of the new city of Miami Beach. The city's water supply came from the Lake Michigan shoreline until 1959, when the federal government bought it from the private company that operated it.
