Miami Lakes is a small community in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is located on the shores of the Miami Lakes Reservoir. The community has a population of about 350 people. The name "Miami Lakes" is derived from its location on the banks of the Miami River and from its original name, Miami Shores. As it developed, residents chose to call their community by this name because it was one that was both distinctive and popular with locals and visitors alike. The first permanent settlers in Miami Lakes arrived in 1875 when J.W. King and his family moved from Baltimore, Maryland to establish what would become known as King's Landing Plantation on the west bank of the Miami River in present-day Miami Lakes. The descendants of J.W.'s parents continued to live there until 1959 when they sold their holdings to developer Averill Harriman for $1 million dollars (the entire amount being donated by Mrs. Harriman). In 1947, North American Power Company purchased all remaining land within present-day Miami Lakes including most of what is now Marlins Pointe development which became part of South Beach neighborhood after World War II ended with defeat for Japan at Tokyo Bay. In 1957, North American sold most of its assets to Anaconda Copper Corporation which organized them into two divisions: Anaconda Copper Mines Limited (later merged into United States copper exploration company Xcel Resources) and Anaconda Mining Corporation (formed as a result of merger between Anaconda Copper Mines Limited and Phelps Dodge Corp.). Phelps Dodge also bought out North American's share in Anaconda Mining Corporation; these two companies continued operations as Phelps Dodge & Co., Ltd until 1984 when they were combined into Anglo-American plc., an English holding company controlled by US private equity firms Venrock Capital Management LLC and Goldman Sachs Group Incorporated among others In 1984, Anglo-American plc., along with other mining companies such as Rio Tinto Resources Ltd., Glencore Iron Ore AG & Goldcorp plc., Canadian National Railway Company Wabash Coal pty Ltd., Millis Coal Co.; Southern Pacific Railroad Company Santa Clara Valley Terminal RR ; Eastern Air Lines; Pan American Airways; Western Electric Railway - electric locomotives remanufactured at Nippon Steel Workshops between 1951-'57 under exclusive licence from GE

The Miami Lakes area was first settled by the Seminoles in the late 18th century. The area became part of Florida in 1905, when the state acquired it from Spain. After independence, the area was used as a hunting ground by Seminole and Floridian Indian tribes. The Miami Lakes Dam was built on the Miami River in 1923 to provide power for a steel mill; it remains in use today. In 1938, Forbes magazine ranked Miami Lakes as one of America's "10 most wealthy communities."
