Miami Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The name Miami Lakes comes from an old Indian word meaning "place where the water flows". The CDP was established on May 6, 1961 by order of then-President John F. Kennedy as part of the Miami metropolitan area. In 1959, during World War II, General Curtis LeMay and his Third Air Force flew bombing missions over Key Biscayne and other parts of South Florida from airfields located in what is now Miami Lakes. When it opened to the public in 1961, Miami Lakes had a small town feel with its single storey homes and wide streets. In fact, when it first became a CDP it only included about 200 homes! Despite this lack of development, since its establishment there have been many changes toMiami Lakes: The population has grown steadily since its inception; the number of homes has increased from less than 200 in 1961 to 2,814 today; and more than 20 businesses have opened within the past few years—-many serving local residents and their needs including restaurants, stores and services. It's no wonder that all things related to community life are thriving—-from sports teams to festivals and events—-all made possible by people coming together for one common goal: making their town better for everyone who loves it!

The first people to live in Miami Lakes were fur traders from Canada who came to Colón Island in 1821 looking for trade goods with India. They built Fort William on the island and named it after Sir John's Creek (now Canadian River) which runs through Toronto. In 1922, developers Charles Ayer and Issac Levy bought land at the head of Miami Lake from the farmers who had founded Miami Lakes. The developers began to build homes and businesses there until World War II when they turned their attention to developing other parts of south Florida such as Coconut Grove and Kendall Beach. After World War II, many new immigrants arrived in South Florida including Italian Americans, Poles, Russians and Czechoslovaks who worked in various industries such as construction and agriculture. In addition, Puerto Rican citizens moved into Miami Lakes during that time period because they wanted an open-air market where they could sell their products without worrying about Dominican or Cuban restrictions on selling food outside their home country
The Miami Lakes area was first settled by the Seminole Tribe in the early 1800s. The area became part of Florida after the United States acquired it from Spain in 1898. In 1915, Miami Lakes was annexed by Lake Worth.
