The Miami Lakes Ammunition Plant (LAK) was a munitions factory in Miami Lakes, Florida that operated from the early 1920s until it closed in 1975. The plant manufactured both rifle ammunition and artillery shells. It became operational as a munitions factory on October 15, 1921, and was originally built to produce shellcasing equipment for the Pembroke Guns Company. However, by the late 1920s LAK had become self-sufficient in producing rifle ammunition and artillery shells. In 1935, LAK began marketing its own propellant products through its subsidiary company American Chemical Corporation (ACC). In 1951 ACC merged with Connellman Manufacturing Company to form Connellman/American Ammunition Corporation (CAA). CAA produced rifle ammunition and artillery shells until 1976 when it shut down its production activities.
Miami Lakes is a small community in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 2,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is located on the northwest side of Miami. The community was first settled in 1892 by German immigrants who named it "Hinschbach" after their home in Hesse, Germany. The name comes from a stream that flows through the community and its surrounding farms. In 1903, Emil Fuchs purchased land in Miami Lakes and built a two-story frame house there which still stands today as one of the most iconic examples of Hardeesville architecture in South Florida. In 1922, Key Thomas developed land northeast of Miami Lakes and began to build what would become known as "Miami Lakes". He named his development "Lakeside" after his childhood home near Frankfurt am Main, Germany where he had been raised until he was 10 years old. By 1928, both Key Thomas's development and Miami Lakes were annexed by Dade County. The post office opened on September 12, 1909 as "Hinschbach". On April 1, 1927, it changed its name to "Miami Lakes". On July 8th of that year it became part of the new city limits which surrounded Dade City proper at that time. On October 9th 1959 it merged with neighbouring Coral Gables into Coral Gables/Miami Lakes Township (later renamed Lakeland). Miami Lakes is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 7,366 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Miami Lakes was Wm. Halsey Cooke, who arrived in 1837 with his family from Worcester, Massachusetts. Cooke erected a log cabin on the site of present-day Coral Gables and named it "Miami". He and his family did not stay very long; within a year they had moved to nearby Cutler Bay after developing land thereabouts for cattle and farming purposes. In 1841, Cooke's son John Fenton Cooke sold title to his father's land to James Kappenberger for $813 ($ as of 2019). Kappenberger built what is now known as "Kappenberger House" in 1848 – one of the earliest homes in Miami Lakes. In 1850, Jacob Senter purchased some acres near Miami Lakes from Abram Biddlehoff for $2,500 ($ as of 2019). Senter developed this land into what is now known as MidtownMiami Heights and named it "Miamisburg". Senter's farm produced corn, wheat and other crops until he sold it in 1865 to Jno Condon for $2,000 ($ as of 2019). In 1870 Jno Condon subdivided lot #4 (now NW 3rd Avenue) into Lots 1 through 8 (grid square: 1010 E 2nd Ave), which became home to many early residents such as A.B. Caldwell (1870–1947), Edwin Matson (1875–1955), Augustus Lyle Cummings (1880–1965), Harry Wurtsmith (1885–1966) and Harry Dillingham Smith (1900–1987). Among those living there during its early years were civic leaders such as Judge Willis Purdy (1882–1964) and Mayor Manuel Diaz Fernandez Jr.(1909−1968)]. In 1915 developer Julius Rosenwald acquired lots 9 through 12 along NW 3rd Avenue from Captain Edward Demarest Commissioners Association [Demarest commissioners were appointed by mayor Dowling Enterprise company]. After World War I Rosenwald constructed several large tract houses on these tracts including Arapahoe Falls Estate (), Glenview Estates (), Indian Rocks Estates ()and Winter Park ().
