A number of restaurants are located within walking distance of both the grocery store/diner chain Safeway as well as some high-end restaurants such as Benares Chinese Restaurant. There are also several golf courses within easy reach; one being PGA Tour-sanctioned Coral Gables Country Club which is home to one of the largest practice fields in SouthFlorida. Miami Lakes is a small community located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The area was historically inhabited by the Timucua Indians and their descendants. The first European to visit Miami Lakes was Captain John Smith on his exploration of the Florida Keys in 1539. In 1838, the United States bought land from the Timucua Indians for $2,000. In 1842, Miami Lakes was created as an unincorporated community when farmers agreed to subdivide their land into lots and sell it to others. When annexation of what is now Miami-Dade County occurred in 1898, most of the small town's residents decided to move to new neighborhoods in Dade County. However, some people kept their homes in Miami Lakes until after World War II when they were reoccupied by displaced Japanese Americans who had been living on South Beach at Key Biscayne during the war. The population of Miami Lakes peaked at 1,500 around 1950 but has declined since then due largely to two factors: a lack of jobs and a changing economy that has made much of Cooksland more accessible through real estate development than citrus production. Today there are only about 150 people living in Miami Lakes as opposed to 100 years ago when there were over 1,000 people here permanently or for many years before that.
The Miami Lakes area was first settled by early American Indian groups in the late 18th century. The Seminole and Miccosukee people were the first to live there. In 1837, Spain ceded Florida to America in a Treaty of Friendship between Spain and America. The US government later acquired the land from Spain through purchase and sale. The Miami Lakes area became part of Fort Lauderdale, Florida after it was incorporated as a city on November 15, 1923.
