In the early 1900s, Miami Gardens was a small town in south-central Florida. It was located on the banks of the St. Johns River and had a population of around 10,000 people. In 1907, Miami Gardens became one of the first municipalities in Florida to be organized as a city. The city's mayor at that time was John Hickey and it had a white population of about 20% of total residents. Miami Gardens grew rapidly thanks to its location and good infrastructure. By 1922, it had over 100 businesses and 2,000 citizens. In 1916, Miami Gardens became one of the first cities in Florida to pass an ordinance granting voting rights to African Americans. The 1920s were also a time when Miami Garden began expanding into other areas in south-central Florida such as Dania Beach and Winter Park. This growth led to several annexation disputes with adjoining towns but eventually all settlements were annexed into Miami Gardens for economic reasons or because they shared common streets with the city limits (such as Roosevelt Boulevard). As Miami Garden continued to grow, so too did its scopes industry which developed due to two factors: demand from American military forces stationed in South Asia during World War II and demand from amateur shooters looking for high quality optics products unavailable anywhere else locally. The growth of citrus production led to increased demand for water supplies needed for crops such as oranges and grapefruit; this also caused problems since trees were not able to thrive near pipelines that transported water across county lines into larger cities like Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. As a result of these concerns, developers decideded to build more spacious homes along State Road 10 instead which would eventually become one of the most expensive areas in South Florida for housing development at that time period. Flooding during Hurricane Andrew forced many residents within miles of Lake Okeechobee into temporary shelters before they could return home; this event is often referred to as "the Great Floridian Flood". Many businesses closed up shop because they could not afford insurance or lost their customers due to lack thereof; however, many other small businesses managed to reopen despite all odds thanks largely to donations from individuals and groups who felt it important for local commerce during a time when many people were struggling financially. AfterAndrew's aftermath ended on August 29thunderscoreed by National Hurricane Centre forecasters as one of the strongest hurricanes on record -Houghland donated another five thousand acres (20 km²) of sugar cane farmland northward towards Marigot Airport so that farmers could rebuild their infrastructure while still harvesting fruit! By November 15th Houghland's donation had been accepted by Realtors throughout southcentral Florida - marking an early example where philanthropy played an instrumental role in post-hurricane reconstruction efforts statewide... This act helped spur development throughout southcentral FL during those difficult early days following Hurricanes Andrew & Katrina

The area became part of the United States in 1800, and saw its peak as a slave-based economy during the 19th century. However, after emancipation in 1865, the area experienced a rapid growth as a suburban community. In 1970, Miami Gardens became an official city within Miami-Dade County.
