Miami Gardens is a small, unincorporated community in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The community was formed in 1924 by the merger of two adjacent communities, Miami Beach and Kendall. The name "Miami Gardens" originated from the fact that both of these communities were located on the banks of Biscayne Bay. The area that now makes up Miami Gardens was originally inhabited by Kissimmee Indian Nation members. In 1836, Captain John Smith discovered and explored the Everglades region of South Florida when he sailed along the coast of Cuba. Upon his return to North America, he reported seeing an extensive swampy area between Key Biscayne and Miami Beach known as "Miamis". This swampy area was later called "Miamis Bay" after General James Moultrie's brigade besieging Fort Moultrie on December 11th 1835 at what is now Overtown Rd., just south of current day Parkland Ave., near present day Miami Lakes Blvd./Biscayne Boulevard. In 1847, Major George Washington Key bought 2,000 acres (10 km²) of land east of present-day Miami Gardens from Apalachicola Native American chief Tecumseh for $2 per acre (0.68 ha). Colonel Andrew Jackson Polk purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) north at Biscayne Boulevard and 147th Street from Key in 1854 for $100 per acre (4 ha). Construction began on a canal system which would link Key West with PortMiami via Coconut Grove Creek in early 1850s and it opened to traffic in November 25th 1850. By 1860s most residents living around Causeway Dr had left for new areas such as Coral Gables or Jupiter because this part of town had become too contaminated with phosphate deposits brought over by Spanish settlers who founded St Augustine in 1795. However some people still lived around those roads until after World War II when they were developed into suburban tracts similar to today's Wynwood or Midtown neighborhoods within city limits because there were no other places to build developments outside city limits during that time period like there are today due to all the development taking place within City Limits during that time period thank you annexation by Dade County! After World War I there was more job opportunities for soldiers returning home so many Germans moved into Southwest Dade County including parts of Homestead where their families already live today as did many Irish immigrants who started arriving here beginning in the late 1800s looking for work opportunities but soon realized this area didn't have any natural resources like coal or oil so they started producing sugarcane which became very profitable then cattle which also became very profitable since land wasn’t selling fast enough so they started raising hogs instead then okra later fruit trees production increased because people wanted fresh fruits not preserved produce In 1925 Mayor Manuel Diaz put together a group made up mostly OFA agents led by Assistant U S Attorney Harry Koury who met at Government House on NW 3rd Avenue to come up with a plan to integrate schoolsinder kids coming back from military service into public school here while we wait for better transportation; After meeting with Mr Diaz we went right away back to our house across NW 3rd Avenue where we organized our own teachers association without any help from either Mr Diaz or anyone else leading us how ever finally after about 6 months we got Mrs Dotty Kingorganized as well she eventually taught first grade before joining us in 1926
The Miami Gardens area was originally inhabited by the Timucua Indians. The area was first explored by Spanish explorers in 1513, and it was not until 1835 that the first white people arrived in Miami Gardens. In 1839, Henry Plantation was founded in Miami Gardens, and it would be the largest plantation in all of Florida. The Plantation would grow to include over 250 acres, and it would be one of the most successful plantations inMiami Gardens history. In 1865, George Washington Keyes purchased some of the land within Miami Gardens from the Timucua Indians for $1,000. At this point, Miami Garden had become a largely white community. However, due to political factors at home and abroad, race continued to play a role in many aspects of life in Miami Garden during this time period. These factors included Reconstruction politics which aimed to rebuild America after the Civil War; however race also played a significant role when it came to business transactions and property rights throughout much of south Florida during this time frame.
