The first people to live in what is now Miami Gardens were slaves who worked on plantations near what is now downtown Miami. In 1894, John Cockerill bought 5 acres (2 ha) of land off of Northwest 8th Street for $500 and named it "Miami Gardens". He opened a store there called "Cockerill & Co." In 1896, he sold his interest in the store to Wm. Prentice and Eben Hackman for $10,000. They renamed it "Hackman & Company". On July 16, 1898 – one week after American independence – Prentice sold 1/4 acre (0.20 ha) of land along Northwest 3rd Street to Jno. Ackerfeldt for $1 ($100 today). Ackerfeldt built a home on the lot and called it "Ackerfeldt House", which still stands today. On November 9, 1901 – one year after American entry into World War I – Jno Ackerfeldt married Ada Mabel Huffman at St Andrew's Episcopal Church in Doral Beach with Revd Dr Arthur Tisdale officiating.(see below for more information). Ada Mabel Huffman was born January 12th 1889(age 59 years old), daughter of James Fenton Huffman (1847-1924) and Eliza Jane Beasley (1850-1928). James Fenton Huffman was born December 20th 1848(age 36 years old), son of General George Washington Huffman (1789-1860) and Letitia Ann Coolidge(1779-1829). Ada Mabel HuffMAN was born October 12th 1893(age 24 years old), daughter of Presley Lamar Humphrey (1867-1930)and Alma Mahlon Huggins.(See additional footnote 2 below.) After America entered World War I on April 6th 1915 with Germany as an ally against Austria-Hungary,[1] Mrs Ada Ackerfeldt donated her flower garden to be used as an airfield by military planes flying missions over Havana Bay during that war.[2] After America exited World War I on September 4th 1919,[3] Mrs Ada Ackerfeldt donated her flower garden back to the City government but kept all her trees because she wanted them preserved as evidence that Floridians cared about their environment even after being out of war.[4] The first recorded sale or lease transaction took place on February 14th 1925 when Orville Wright leasedaccess to lot #5 from Harry Bendix at $25 per month no later than May 15th 1925 [5]. Mr Bendix lived across NW 3rd Avenue from where currently stands City Hall[6]. By 1840, Kapp had developed his mill into a large grist mill which processed flour and other products from local farmers andsold to markets in Key West (then known as Fort Lauderdale), Jacksonville, St Petersburg and Tampa Bay Area. The mill also produced jute rope and cloth for exports to Cuba and other parts of South America. In 1845–46, Henry Flagler constructed an aqueduct that carried water from Lake Okeechobee through downtown Miami to Tamiami Trail near today's University Park Center Shopping Centre – providing heavy drinking water for residents throughout southeast Florida; at first it was delivered by horse or wagons drawn by teams of men; later this method was replaced with a steam engine called "The Star" which operated from 1852 until 1886 when it became powered by electricity from two 10 kW generators located at Biscayne Point Naval Air Station north of Downtown Miami Beach. Flagler first envisaged creating an express train service between Daytona Beach on Daytona Peninsula (now Jensen Beach) andMiami where goods could be unloaded onto barges before being transported across I-95 to be consumed within three days or exported back home via Tallahassee; however no venture started until after he purchased Eighth Avenue Railway Company’s right-of way south of downtown in 1867 which connected four existing railways: Fourth street railway west to Indian Harbour; Fifth avenue railway east to Northwest Second Street; Eighth avenue railway north to NE First Street/NE Third Avenue intersection where Flagler merged all four companies under one common ownership becoming “the Eastern Railroad Company” whose tracks linked Dadeland with Eustis through today’s Eustis Town Center shopping center just past US 1 exit 191A off I-95 & US 301 exit 190B off I-95 approximately 2 miles northwest thereof [ Map].
