In 1906 Domingo Sánchez purchased 160 acres (60 ha) with a grant from President Theodore Roosevelt for $3 million – making him one of the largest landowners in South Florida at that time. He organized what would become known as "the sugar caste" which trafficked sugarcane grown in Cuban plantations to provide Brazilian sugar mills with valuable hardwood lumber needed to build their warships and other ships afloat. By 1912 he had developed a refinery with 400 employees producing gasoline and kerosene products as well as being a major player in South Florida's citrus industry through his holdings including Citrus Heights orchard and two plants near Fort Lauderdale; both were closed by 1974 but reopened as tourist attractions operated by Sánchez descendants today known as Santiago Farms Incorporated.. On October 15th 1907 Captain George Washington Cephus landed his schooner Dona Isabel at Pier 21 near modern day DowntownMiami when 125 passengers disembarked unloaded sacks of flour, rice, beans and coffee bound for Havana aboard SS Dona Isabel captained by Capt Manuel Avilés Diaz

Miami Gardens was founded in 1917 by Captain James P. Hickey and his wife, Mrs. Mabel L. Hickey. The first post office in Miami Gardens was established in 1916. The name of the community was changed to Miami in 1924 because it had been so popularly known as “Maidstone” on the east coast of Florida. In 1949, Miami Gardens became a city with its own mayor and council.
