As American immigrants began arriving during the late 1800s they purchased tracts of land around what is now downtownMiami from native Seminole Indians through purchase or sale agreements that Typically lasted three years or less due to Indian speculation about future US land sales possibilities outside their traditional hunting grounds. It became a U.S. military base during World War II and now has a population of over 150,000 people. This led to many farms becoming unproductive due to lack of acreage or other natural resources and they were sold off piecemeal or abandoned altogether after being purchased by various interests throughout southern Florida until annexation into the United States following World War II brought about an influx of GI's (Garrison Army) soldiers with little interest in farming operations that quickly deteriorated into hellish urban areas while rural communities slowly withered away - leaving behind only some small towns scattered around remote rural areas struggling still today with limited access to education, transportation, job opportunities or services even when these are available within commuting distance through cities like FtLauderdale/Fort Lauderdale itself! Miami Gardens was founded by Captain James K. Polk on November 5, 1855 as a farming village in Miami County, Florida. The area that is now Miami Gardens was part of the old Town of Miami and was first named "Polk's Settlement." In 1858, the town changed its name to "Miami" after General Andrew Jackson. On December 16, 1861, during American Civil War, a group of Confederate soldiers under the command of Major General John C. Breckinridge attacked and burned down the town center in what is now known as the Battle of Miami Gardens. In 1924, Drainage District No. 4 was created from a portion of Broward County that included parts of what is now Miami Gardens and Plantation Key. The district served all of Greater Miami Beach except for South Beach which belonged to Overtown and Coral Gables.
