The population of the City of Miami Gardens was 1,844 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The land for Miami Gardens was donated by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto on July 26, 1559 to Alonso de Croix alias "Hernandez" as part of an agreement between Spain and Hernandez's father-in-law Don Francisco Meneses y Valdez. Manuel Diaz purchased some 3 square miles (8 km2) from Hernando de Soto for $900 on October 5, 1868. On November 7th same year he sold his interest in the land to General Pedro López Jiménez who had been named Commandant General of Cuba's defenses against Russian incursions during the Cuban War of Independence. LópezJiménez' heirs continued to own and operate the plantation until it was acquired by Joséfina Pimentel y Pimentel en 1892 which led to its conversion into a real estate company known as "Pimentel & Co." In 1925 Manuel Diaz formed a partnership with Julián García Guerra and they renamed their firm "Garcia & Diaz". After years managing various properties including sugar plantations in Puerto Rico, Colombia and Venezuela they opened their first office in Havana where they bought lands that would later become part of Brickell Avenue near today's plaza Las Americas

The town of Miami Gardens was established in 1917 as a small community on the banks of Biscayne Bay. In 1926, it became an incorporated municipality and in 1932 it became a city with its own police department and fire department. The first mayor of Miami Gardens was Harry Willsman. There were no annexation requests from other municipalities until after thebeginnings of South Korea's occupation of Southwestern US during World War II which led to increased traffic and housing prices that caused many people to flee to Miami Gardens for security reasons; however many people returned once hostilities stopped. In 1967, when Dade County merged into county government, Miami Garden's strip mall located at NW 107th Street and Northwest First Avenue became part of Dade City Limits; however most commercial real estate development outside this central business district has continued unabated throughout the years with several major projects completed or under construction such as Miamis Place mall (opened in 1986), Dolphin Square (opened in 1990), Coral Gables Mall (opened in 1992), Key Biscayne Center Crossing - Phase I (opened in 2003) and Phase II - Lighthouse Point Park project announced by Mayor Manny Diaz on November 15th 2009 which will include 8 large towers totaling over 1 million square feet with retail space on each floor above ground level.. These developments have drawn much criticism from residents who see them as bland facades designed by white developers while their homes are being bulldozed or left vacant because they cannot afford to build new dwellings following years of economic decline caused by high crime rates and lack of jobs opportunities
In the early 1800s, Miami Gardens was a small Indian community located in northeastern Miami County. In 1868, the area became part of the newly organized Miami-Dade County when it was created from parts of bothMiami and Broward Counties. The first white person to live in Miami Gardens was Augustus Chapman, who arrived in 1851. By 1860, there were only a few hundred people living here. The area experienced some fairly significant growth during the late 19th century; by 1900, Miami Gardens had over 10,000 residents. During this time period, many businesses and residences were built within what is now known as The Flats neighborhood on Northwest First Avenue between Northwest 8th Street and Northwest Seventh Street. This district saw some of its most substantial growth beginning in the early 20th century as more upscale African Americans moved into The Flats to escape poverty and racism in other areas of town. The neighborhood's heyday came to an end around World War II when waves of new black arrivals flooded into The Flats following the U.S.-Soviet Union Cold War conflict. However, today's residents continue to make their mark on this traditional South Florida neighborhoods through their entrepreneurship and creativity.
