The first European to visit Miami Beach was a Spanish conquistador, Juan Pablo Fernández de Oviedo, in 1565. The area was part of the Spanish "Viceroyalty of Florida" until 1763. Englishman James Cook explored and mapped the area in 1768 when he sailed through the region on his way from England to India. In 1821, under U.S. President James K. Polk, Miami Beach became a public territory of Florida with its own government and legislature. In 1896, construction began on what is now MidtownMiami by developer Alfred Brickell as an apartment building and race track called "New Miami". The track opened in 1899 and quickly became one of South Florida's most popular attractions; it has been said that more than half of all Racing fanatics living in the region are based at New Miami Racetrack. In 1912, Mayor Manuel D'Avila turned down $1 million offered by developer Stephen Ladd to build a new civic center on Bayfront Park because he felt that such an expenditure would only benefit wealthier citizens while disadvantaging poorer ones. In 1933, Hurricane Godfrey hit South Florida hard – some estimates say up to 50% of homes were destroyed or damaged – leaving much debris behind including many luxurious mansions built during the late-19th century just within sight of bayfronts now filled with seaweed and garbage bags high enough for people to stand on them! The storm also looted entire neighborhoods as looters went door-to-door looking for anything they could find before returning home empty-handed! After the storm damage had been fully assessed there was no money available to rebuild any housing so many homeless began living outside along side Highway 1 where they could be seen by passing motorists passing through town every day! This unsightly scene lasted until 1949 when then Mayor Don Quixote Gimenez (who later founded Sun Life Stadium) decided that rather than letting these hooligans have their way with town he would put up proper Architecture which would make this area look like something back in days instead of completely abandoned! This led eventually tothe creation of MidtownMiami Shopping District which today includes over 100 stores including Macy’s, Sears etc.. It was also during this time that Miami Beach started becoming known as one of Americas most beautiful beaches thanks largely to development projects such as Biscayne Boulevard (now Collins Avenue) which connected downtown with beachside communities like Coral Gables and Malibu Cove where wealthy elites used their private jets/boats/carriages everyday for amazing views!
