In Melbourne, Florida in 1903, a group of men led by Captain George H. Withers took up arms against the Seminole Indians. The battle lasted three days and ended with the white men losing about 50 killed, including Captain Withers, and probably more than 60 wounded. After the battle, some Seminoles retreated to their traditional hunting areas but others continued to resist United States efforts to make them leave. The shooting occurred near what is now Grady Memorial Stadium on University Avenue in downtown Melbourne. In 2006, a plaque was unveiled at Grady Memorial Stadium honoring those who died in that battle as well as other battles fought throughout history between whites and Native Americans.

Melbourne was founded on October 25, 1885 by two brothers named George and John Cook. The first post office in Melbourne was established on December 6, 1885. In 1907, the town of Beech Grove became a separate municipality within the city limits. The City of Melbourne annexed Beech Grove on February 14, 1912. On November 3rd, 1913 the City of Pensacola annexed Victoria Park which lie to the south east of Beech Grove and to the west of Victoria Park (now known as Parrish Park). On January 1st 1914 Jens Jensen incorporated Melbourne as a village with a population of 207 people. On September 12th 1916 during World War I American forces moved into what is now downtown Melbourne after they had been ordered to abandon nearby Fort Supply because it was under enemy control and there were explosives left over from Construction Project No 4 (ATF Building). This move marked one victory for America against Germany during World War I as it demonstrated that America could not be taken advantage of by its enemies despite recent assurances from President Woodrow Wilson that such behavior would not happen. After being ordered back out of town by General MacArthur due to an abundance of munitions available closer to home American Forces retreated upriver towards Pensacola where they finally surrendered on November 11th 1918 without any fight or loss
