Stevenson as he and his men were garrisoning the fort during the Seminole Wars. After a long battle that saw many casualties on both sides, the fort surrendered to General AndrewJackson’s forces on December 17. As part of the Treaty of Muscovy, Spain ceded Florida to America in 1813 and for over a century, ammunition production in Melbourne was conducted at Spanish Fort Ammunition Works. The facility was closed down in 1967 but when it reopened as a Gunnery School in 1987, it continued to produce ammunition for Americans until 2003 when it closed again due to budget cuts. Today there is only one remaining gunnery school in the United States that produces ammunition – Arizona National Guard Ammunition Plant near Tucson. During its heyday AmmoCorp produced over 1 million rounds per day for American rifle and shotgun shooters from 1903-2003 including batches of FMJ (firearm munitions jelly) rounds that helped win World War II and Korea!

Melbourne was founded in 1824 as a small town on the east coast of Florida by American citizens, primarily Scotsman Alexander Macdonald and his brother-in-law, James McGillivray. The name Melbourne is derived from the Spanish word "mérida" meaning "west." The first permanent settler in Melbourne was John C. Post who arrived in 1827. He built a cabin on what is now Indian Creek Boulevard and named it Melbourne after his hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland. A year later, he married Anna Maria Stroud who also came to America with him. They had one child, John Post Jr., who would become a U.S. federal judge and serve as mayor of Miami Beach before dying in office at the age of 88 years old in 1961. Melbourne experienced rapid growth during its early years due to its strategic location midway between Jacksonville and Tampa Bay on the Gulf Coast and its cheap land prices. By 1830, it had adopted the name "Merritt Island" for its primary landing site on Tampa Bay because no one wanted to live near Fort Myers or Pensacola because of their high cost of living. In 1837, the British North American Company organized a group of investors led by David Brown to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) northwest of Melbourne from Appomattox County for $10 per acre ($2 million today). In 1840–41 they leased an additional 180 acres (71 hectares) from fort commander Major General Andrew Jackson to establish what became Jacksonville Landing which was soon renamed Jacksonville proper after Jackson's visit that year when he proclaimed Florida an open territory under English rule. In 1847 David Brown sold 320 acres (116 hectares) northeast of downtown Jacksonville Landing to Colonel Henry Clay Beecher for $1 per acre ($4 million today). Beecher developed this area into what are today known as Midtown Jacksonville and Downtown Jacksonville neighborhoods including Beecher Circle which contains several upscale stores and restaurants dating back to this time period such as Macy's Department Store & Herald Grill Annex which opened in 1922; Brickell Hotel; The OmniJacksonville; Jaguars Clubhouse; Belvedere Recreation Center; Live Oak Lawn Golf Course; Joe Louis Arena & Parkade & other nearby properties with full access to shops and restaurants located within walking distance including some that remain intact such as Woolworths Pharmacy where IMAX Theater screens movies until late evening daily;and Dillard's Department Store which closed its doors in 1967 but remains vacant today across from JELD-WEN furniture store
