The Margate Police Department was established in 1922. The department’s first officer, Capt. George King, served as the first chief of police. In 1933, Lt. Gov. Harry H. Byrd appointed Maj. Gen. John J. Pershing to head the Margate Police Department as a result of his new program to reform law enforcement in Florida and across the United States. In 1951, Sgt. Leroy Rommel joined the Margate Police Department as a patrolman and became its first detective sergeant in 1957-58 under then Chief Charles Lannon Sr.. From 1961 until 1966 Chief Leroy Rommel was also Commanding Officer for Patrol District 2 which included all of Margate Harbor including most of Belle Isle and Turtle Bay communities located on Long Key island north of Margate harbor and within easy driving distance of both cities (except for Belle Isle). Chief Leroy Rommel is credited with developing what is now known as “the standard” Margate police response plan that has been used by other departments throughout the world since its inception On July 3rd, 1978 at about 5:00 p.m., Captain Roy Rogers Jr., an experienced law enforcement officer who had recently retired from the Baltimore County Sheriff's Office, responded to reports that someone had been shot inside an apartment building on North State Street in Margate Harbor Rogers called for backup while he entered the building to investigate . He encountered several people inside who were obstructing his investigation when he arrived; these individuals turned out to be participants in a robbery that had just occurred at nearby Local 665 convenience store less than 10 minutes earlier! The suspects were apprehended without incident after Rogers executed a traffic stop on their vehicle which resulted in one gunshot wound suffered by one suspect and four arrests subsequent thereto including two juvenile suspects age 16 years or younger! This event helped bring national attention to policing issues in Florida which were being inadequately addressed by state officials at the time . It marked only the second time during my thirty year career as chief that I ever responded to an armed citizen situation outside my jurisdiction – this was also thanks entirely toCaptain Roy Rogers Jr.– something that I believe we should always continue working towards!

Margate is a town located on the mouth of the St. Johns River in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Margate in 1824. They were led by Captain John Demarest and His Party, who landed on what is now known as Demarest Island and built a small cabin. The island served as a landing place forriverboats until 1829 when a channel was constructed and the island became mainland Margate. In 1893, two brothers named Edwin Ayer opened a grocery store in downtown Margate which soon became one of the most popular businesses in town. They were followed by their brother-in-law Gifford Bogue and his son Aubrey Ayer after that until 1925 when Gifford Bogue died suddenly from an operation he had undergone to remove a tumor on his brainstem. During World War II, many local residents volunteered with the military and helped build airfields throughout southern Florida; including nearby Clearwater Beach where they erected tents and barracks while also manufacturing munitions at nearby plants such as Ford Motors Manufacturing Company and Allied Signal Corporation. After hostilities ended, many of these men returned home to resume their normal lives but some retained their connection to the community through their service or ownership of businesses such as Radio Shack which still stands today across from Clearwater Marina on Fourth Street near Bayou Road (formerly UFMS). In 1986,Margate achieved its current name when it annexed part of neighboring Stonington which at that time had only 1 person living there total
