Margate is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town began as a small hamlet on the mainland opposite Jacksonville on what is now Margate Bay. In 1892, developer J.C. Forbes built his home and office complex on land that he donated to Margate for its incorporation as a village on November 5, 1893. In 1896-97 when construction began on the first courthouse in Florida, Forbes contributed $2,000 towards the cost of building it and contributed another $1,500 for every additional court seat needed thereafter (the current Courthouse Annex became operational in 1974). Forson's donation encouraged other developers to donate land to Margate Village and by 1910 there were over 20 homes and businesses in the village with an average population of 100 people per day. By 1915 when commercial fishing improved and more people started coming to live near shoreline jobs during high season, tourism became a major force behind growth within Margate Village; by 1930 it had become so prosperous that Forbes tax exemption enabled him to build his second home on Prospect Avenue which still stands today as one of Margate's most recognizable landmarks - known locally simply as "Forsons' House". When World War II hit America hard few Americans could afford to leave their homes but many Floridians did Kunsan Steel Workshops(later National Steel Corporation) located just outside of Jacksonville made some of America’s finest welders including USS North Carolina (CV-9), USS South Dakota (SS-205), USS Arizona (BB-39), USS Memphis (CA-14) among others parts from local plants like RCA Victor Plant #3 located in St Petersburg making records here at our plant like Hiroyuki Kawai who later achieved international fame with his invention called “Kawai Recorder” this technology allowed us back then more opportunities than ever before thank you very much! As war approached rationing set limits on what materials could be shipped into or out of country things got tight especially aluminum so we had problems finding parts for engines until we got help from our friends at Nippon Teldesco who helped us get back into production running three different plants all doing Aluminum cans now we have been back up and running again since early 1945 thanks To Our Friends At Nippon Teldesco

From this base of operations, Portuguese traders voyaged up the Gulf coast to St. Augustine and Tampa Bay ports before returning home in their ships in 1606. In 1830, Fort Walton became an arsenal for troops defending Florida against Seminole Indian attacks. It was redesignated as a naval station in 1845 by Commodore James Kline with headquarters atFort Walton Beach on Jupiter Island; commandant General John Cushing served from 1847 to 1850 at Fort Walton Beach Command Post #2 which became decommissioned on January 1, 1903 when Commandant General Thomas Seymour Hill assumed command from Commodore James Kline. In 1861–1863 Confederate forces fought here during the Civil War; Union troops landed here September 12th 1861 under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer to capture Mobile Bay but were repulsed with heavy losses including one general killed and five captured lieutenant generals plus two staff officers: Winfield Scott Hancock and Nathaniel Banks After the war local residents restored some parts of Forts Walton Beach Command Post #2 while others built new military installations around Jupiter Island until December 6th 1945 when all remaining military functions were transferred to Naval Station Jacksonville effective immediately pursuant to Executive Order NoKo 9850 or “Joint Expeditionary Base Program” which had been classified Top Secret/Confidential since its inception four days earlier by President Harry Truman who believed that vital Defense activities would be conducted out of Joint Expeditionary Base Jacksonville rather than within National Security Agency’s secret black budget program – Central Intelligence Agency’s covert action operation known as “The Gray Lady” On July 2nd 1960 Margate's only post office closed because mail volume had plummeted due To integrate schools into county government attempts at austerity programs After more than 20 years without a post office Margate citizens rallied together led by Mayor Bob Easley formed a petition drive for their own post office They managed to collect over 400 signatures required for installation By October 1959 postal service finally arrived after community effort Margate's first postmaster - Mrs Hilda Sisson - hand deliveredmail from her home On November 10th 1959 Dr Tipper Gore deliveredthe final packages receiving numerous Congratulations from locals

According to theHistory.com website, Margate was first settled in 1821 by a group of English settlers led by Captain John Pritchard. The town grew rapidly and soon became a major center for trade and commerce with its location on the sound between Florida and Georgia drawing potential passengers and traders from all over. In 1827, Margate became part of what is now Alabama. In 1851, the town was destroyed by a fire that burned for days Throughout much of the country; it remains one of the most destructive natural disasters in American history. The town quickly rebuilt and continued to grow until it reached its peak around 1900 when it had a population of over 100 residents. However, following World War I, Margate began to decline as tourism replaced manufacturing as the mainstay of its economy. By the end of the 20th century, Margate had few remaining residents and only a limited number of businesses remained open while portions of downtown were abandoned altogether. Today, much of what remain once thrived during its heyday is still largely unoccupied with no plans being made to redevelop or revitalize it into something more successful than an abandoned shell
